THE COURIER. cccccccccccccccccccccc NOTES AND QUERIES A statement was made in last week's Courieu concerning the prolific work of Anthony Hope. Can you give me any definite information concerning the date of their publication? M. G. Tho statement made in last week's Courier was raoh and partially in correct. It was corrected in tho proof, but the compositor did not heed the correction. Mr. Hawkins published her first book, "A Man of Mark," in 1839 at his own expense, and impoverished him self thereby. From that time until the success of "The Prisoner of Zenda," Mr. Hope's life was by no means all roses. At this time he looked on the bar as his career in life, and, far from think ing of literature as a profession, he simply wrote for amupement. "Father Stafford," published in 1890, was his second book, also a financial failure; then followed the writing of short stories for the St. James Gazatte, several of which were republished in the vol ume entitled "Sport Royal." "Mr. Witt's Widow," published in 1882, was more successful; "A Change of Air and "Half a Hero" were published the follow ing year. "Haifa Hero" by the way, has just been reissued by Harper's in a new edition. Then he wrote i'The Prisoner of Zenda," which established his reputation. Subsequent books of his are "The Dolly Dialogues," "The God in the Car," "The Indiscretion of the Duchess," and at present he is en gaged on a series of romantic stories, the scene of which is laid in an imagin ary Italian republic in theMiddle Ages. Who is the artist that HIi-ftietcF Ibr, syndicate articles in the Stats Journal? Is he a New York man? D. P. Heaven only knows, I do not. I think he is probably a New York man, at least I hope he does not dwell in Lincoln. I think that the Journal syndicate artist and Mr. Fred Kettler, who frescoed the Lansing drop curtain must be one and the same. I do not think that two such masters of form and drawing couldinhabit this unworthy perhse at one time Mgr. Infgerexoll When a gentleman asks a lady to a dance is he expected to send flowers? That is a leading question. Theoret ically it sometimes seems a sad waste of duty to drag roses to a dance where they are crushed and laid about on window sills and divans and steam radiators until they wilt and half the time are stolen by some black hearted wretch at the close of the ball. But practically I should say its the thing to send flowers. It makes the girl feel complete and content and altogether well treated. Flowers are customary like gloves and fans, and to be without them is to be more or less uncomfort able. Of course they are really not necessary and the gentleman who omits to send them can not be criticised, but when they are sent they certainly aod greatly to the young lady's pleasure, and to her graciousness and charm. That the gentleman takes her to the dance is merely a regulation matter of form, he may do it under protest and compulsion, because her card was puj in his invitation or at the entre ty of a despairing hostess. But flowers are a personal and individual attention, and they indicate that the young man is interested in the evening and h er enjoy ment of it. w i FREE To every person who sub scribes for The Courixk, price 12.00, and pays a year in advance, we will give a year's subscription to the COSMOPOLITAN This offer is open for a short time only to new sad old subscribers alika Canon City coal at Coal and Lime Co. the Wbttebreast F.
