POINTS IN POLITICS
0KKCCCCKCK
When the executive committee of the
Nebraska league of republican clubs
turned down Mr. Rosewater's applica
tion for a place on the delegation from
this state to the national republican
league convention held In Cleveland
last year, there were some republicans
who thought that action not Justified.
They claimed that while Mr. Rosewater
had opposed some republican candidates
he was still a republican. Those who
were against Mr. Rosewater's selection
maintained that the editor of the Bee
was not a republican and could not be
depended upon to support the republi
can candidates whenever his malice or
private Interests dictated otherwise.
This being so. It was unwise. In their
opinion, to Belect Mr. Rosewater as a
representative of the party. It Is no
secret that at this time when Mr. Rose
water was trying to get recognition
from the executive committee of the
league so as to be brought into closer
relations with Presidential Candidate
McKinley at the Ohio convention, he
was laying the wires to secure an un
disputed dictatorship In the republican
politics of Douglas county. It was
stated in his behalf at the committee
meeting that Mr. Rosewater was en
deavoring to harmonize matters in
Douglas county, and that the recogni
tion by the committee would help out
that endeavor. By harmonizing it was
meant that he was trying to gain abso
lute control. In view of recent events
the refusal of the committee to make
Mr. Rosewater a delegate was certainly
wise. In the campaign in Douglas coun
ty he opposed every republican candi
date, men against whom there could
be no possible objection. It is gratifying
to know that at least one body of repub
licans in Nebraska had the independ
ence to stand out against this man who
has on almost every occasion exerted
himself to secure the defeat of the re
publican ticket. To the republican
league of Nebraska belongs the credit
for the first real rebuke the party has
administered to the editor of the Omaha
Bee.
Mr. Bryan in the World-Herald of one
day last week had an Interesting edit
orial on "A House Divided Against It
self." In it he said: "A majority has a
right to rule both In the country and in
the party. The policy of a party should
be determined by a majority. of that
party and the voters will not be satis,
fled with anything less If they appre
ciate the right and privileges of citizen,
ship." This Idea of Mr. Bryan's is
sound. The majority of the party cer
tainly ought to dictate the policy of
that party, and in this connection Mr.
Bryan's attention Is called to the vote
of the democratic party in this state at
last week's election. For Mr. Phelps
and free silver the democrats of the
state cast, in round numbers, 7,000 votes.
For Mr. Mahoney and sound money,
the democrats of Nebraska cast, in
round numbers, 14,000 votes. It would
hardly be possible to secure a more
definite expression of the will of the
democratic party in this state, and it
would seem that If Mr. Bryan and his
colleagues In the free sliver wing of
the party appreciate the rights and
privileges of citizenship they will be
satisfied with this expression.
Investigation discloses the fact that
The Courier was mistaken in saying as
it did last week that the Standard, a
sensational Illustrated newspaper In
New York had published a picture of
two young women of this city, one an
employe of Htrpolshelmer & Co., and
the other a student of the state univer
sity. The error was annoying to the
employes of Herpolsheimer & Co. and
the students and we regret exceedingly
that the mistake occurred and that in
nocent people should have been done an
Injustice.
