THE COURIER. it i i NOTES AND QUERIES Some of the papers in discussing the late incident which gave a certain army officer, a certain social club and a cer tain young business man such wide spread notoriety, said that strictly speak ing the club referred to only has one gentleman member. Who is this gen tleman? Anxious Sl'hsoribkk. He would be a particularly clever per Bon who could tell what the writers for the Lincoln newspapers mean when they write. I have never been furnished a key, and I am forced, like the rest of the public, to stand by and wonder. The most that can be done in the matter is to guess, and I ilnd on consulting with membeis of the club that there is a pop ular understanding that Guy Hurlbutis the person to whom belongs the distinc tion of being the gentleman par excel lence. Mr. Hurlbut wears his chrysan themum with the same graceful aban don as of yore, and seems in no wise dis turbed by the accusation that he is a gentleman. It may be that some other person was meant, but Mr. Hurlbut is my guess. Is there a new work by Anthony Hope in press? Zenda. Mr. Hawkins is at work on a new serial which, it is said, will be ctlled "Phrozo." The scene of the story is a Greek island. Phrozo is a Greek be.uty. Some time ago mention was made in The Coubier of a new Doone book by Blackmore. Has this book been pub lished. R. T. B. According to an announcement in the Bookman, Dodd, Meadfc Co., New York, will publish November 10, "Slain by the Doanee.'' The same authority says this new book is not a sequel to "Lorna Doone," but it has to do with the same place and period, and some of its char actes are identical with those of Black more's greatest work. The renowned John Ridd appears at a critical stage of the story. ADAGIO. The coming night has -wrapped the weary world In a robe of solemn ashen gray. And, as tbo light dies out across the sky. Take down your violin and play. Bat do not strike a major chord I pray. But play a mystic, minor strain, .W That fills my soul with pleasures vague and sweet A pleasure nigh akin to pain. Let no strong passion mar the gentle strain. But weavo a melody of dreams. As soft as silence, as sweet as sleep. As tender as themoon's pale oeams.
