Miss Alice Rtghter baa began ber
work at tho university. This young ar
tist has a future worth waiting and
workinq for as well as worth our watch
ing. Her year's work in Paris is repre
sented by an immense pile of sketches
with a few done in water color. Her
lead pencil work has unusual strength.
It"k strong where most young artists
are wek, that is in technique. Fre
quently the youngster has imagination
and a good idea of composition but the
color 'will be sloppy and the drawing
slovenly, it it be careful anywhere the
effect is labored . Miss Rigbters draw
ing of a gargoyle might suit Buskin be
cause of its thoroughly conscientious
work, and it might at the same time
secure Whistler's approbation by its
freedom, its lack of f ussiness and its ar
tistic method. Pencil sketches are
rarely interesting because so little of
the artist's personality can be trans
ferred to them. Her's arc; they have
atmosphere, vibration and personality.
Sometimes, as in the misty row of fish
ing boats that the tide has almost
tracked, they have poetry. However,
this last fascination is an absent quality
in most of her sketches. I think it will
come with experience. Pain, love, heart
ache will draw lines on her face, but she
will get even with Time by putting the
lesson into her pictures. Miss Righter
belongs to an artistic family. Her aunt,
Mre. Hargreaves, uses her birthright in
creating joyful costumes. Her medium
of expression is gowns instead of pencil,
crayon or brush. '1 he French call the
effect of artistic instincts chic. If we
had a word that meant artistic and
stylish too we could get along without
the French word.
Wednesdey evening the members of
the Grace Methodist church gave a re
ception to their pastor. Rev. C. M. Shep
herd and wire. Presiding Elder H. T.
Davis and daughter and Rev. and Mrs.
Shepherd received the gueste. Music
and short addresses by various members
of the church made up the evening's en
tertainment. The Oroghilian quartette
of the Wesleyan university closed the
program.

Mr. Hoyt was with his company on
the occasion of its recent appearance
here in "A Contented Woman." We
have not seen him here since he was
with his other little wife.PIora Walsh,
five years ago. Mr. Hoyt looks older
and quieter than he did then. People
who know have told me that the beau,
tious Carrie leads him a dance of it and
that he don't dare call his soul or his
eye glasses his own any more. Mr
Hoyt knows perfectly well that his wife
can't act, but what is the poor man to
do? She will act and her word is law.
yhen she gets bad notices she goes of
into a temper and says it's all the fault
of the play whioh isn't well enough
written to bring out her peculiar talents.
ABSOon as she began playing this
season she was pretty well sat upon
and began to object to the play. She
said it was not heavy enough and gave
her too little opportunity for sentiment.
"My dear, "said Hoyt, mildly, "take the
part to Sydney Rosenfiel and have him
re-write for you, that's quite in his line,
and tell him to send the bill to me.''
Mr. Hoyt made a neat little curtain
speech in which he said how much, his
wife wanted success and how much he
wanted it for her. Poor Charley Hoyt!
He can't buy Caroline success or make
it for her. Life would be easier for him
if he could.
