Plattsmouth Bends tho following:
Mrs. J. N. Wise has returned from
Denver.
Miss Annie O'Rourko is visiting
Beulab Elson.
Dr. Marshall and family are at home
again after a visit at Burlington, Iowa,
Mrs. W. B. Shryock and daughter, of
Louisville, are at Mrs. Waybright's.
Miss Myrtle Mann, of Lincoln, has
returned home.
Mrs. C. S. Sherman departed this
morning for Crete, where sho has secur
ed a position in the schools.
Mrs. J. W. Hendee is at homo again
having passed the summerat Kewaunee,
III.
A large party of young people camped
out and fished at the Cedar Creek lakes
last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Waugh were at
Glen wood Friday.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Altshuler arrived
this morning from Chicago and will
reside here permanently.
Mn. W. K. Fox is visiting her par
ents at Shenandoah, Iowa.
The Woman's club held a business
meeting at Mrs. Wescott's September 2.
The Omaha people are full of enthu
siasm concerning the Ak-Sar-Ben ball
that will occur on the Nineteenth. The
committee in charge, and no one knows
exactly who they are, have selected
three of the most beautiful young ladies
as maids of honor to the queen from
the towns of Lincoln, Beatrice, Grand
Island, Hastings and Nebraska City.
Omaha will be represented by a much
larger number. These ladies will sit in
the royal box and the knights with
the king at their head will march up
and down before them and do obeisance.
Then the king will select tho queen
from the beautiful ones and he will send
her a gold crown by a little page, and
the crown will have a real diamond in
it. The lady keeps the souvenir to
remind her of that occasion when she
was selected in the midst of beauty as
the most beautiful. The names of the
Lincoln ladies invited to be maids of
honor are: Miss Latta, Miss Clark and
Mrs. Charles Burr.
The first of the month Mr. G.
Faucou will take the position of
accountant on the B. & M. road.

W.S. Summers who sometime ago re
tired from the attorney general's ofllco
has decided to remain in Lincoln. Ho
has established himself in tho McMurtry
block and will practice law against all
comers. Mr. Summers is ono of tho
best known and most popular joung
lawyers in tho state.
C. II. ImhofT returned Thursday from
New York.
There was a meeting of the Pleasant
Hour club at Zehrung's store Tuesday
afternoon. A number of new members
were received and somo of tho details
for the coming season wero arranged.
Miss Nettie Hammond's frionds hon
ored her birthday Thursday afternoon
by a pleasant surprise. Miss Ham
mond received a number of handsome
presents. The guests were entertained
with music after which refreshments
were served. Thoso present were: Mes
dames Frampton, McPherson, Mcusel
and Hainmond; Misses Nellie Camp
bell, Libbie Owens, Jennie Brothouwcr,
Mary Lockridge, Nettie Hammond and
Miss Hamilton of Alabama; Messrs.
Frampton, Arthur Hammond, Harry
Giffen, Boy Hammond, John Hammond,
Edward GitTen and Gero Carder.
The club of ladies who have met
weekly at Miss Phoebe Elliot's this
summer for tho study of the world's re
legion have closed their work. The
study has been of an extended nature,
and, like all that are conducted by Miss
Elliot, pleasant in the extreme.
Captain and Mrs. R. O. Phillips have
returned from their western trip through
Montana and Washington.
Prof. H. H. Nicholson left Thursday
for Minneapolis.
Leroy Sawyer is in Chicago.
E. H. Seal left Tor Philadelphia Thurs
day. Mrs. C. H. Houghton is in San Fran
cisco.
Carl Morton, the youngest of Secre

Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Davis entertained
the Epworth League on Tuesday. The
entertainment was lawn and melon,

Miss Henrietta Hollowbush left on
Thursday for Boston where she will re
enter the New England Conservatory.
Miss Hollowbush has given much timo
and study to organ study and attained
rare proficiency. The coterie, of which
she has been the center during her few
monthsin Lincoln, will miss her greatly.
The York Military band serenaded
The Courier on Thursday. It had
bright red coats and silver instruments
and it played good music. Thank you
York. Lancaster will play for you when
the roses bloom again.
Miss Verona Wireback, late of the
Philadelphia School of Industrial Art,
has arrived in the city to take charge of
primary manual training for young
and old at the Polytechnic.
Miss Mariel Gere and Miss Cora
Smith left Tuesday afternoon for Rose
ville III. to be present at the wedding
of Miss Rose Higgins and Mr. George
Lawson Sheldon.
Thomas Mulvihill, lessee of Boyd's
theatre Omaha, D. W. Haynes, manager
of Boyd's, and G . E. Raymond, manager
of Paine's "Siege of Vicksburg," which
opened in Omaha last night, opened a
box at the Funke Wednesday night.
The members of the "Faust" and Flint
companies were guests of Mr. Zehrung
at the performance of "The Politician."
The gayest picnic party of the season
was organized by Fritz Fucke last
Thursday evening. They rode out to
Branson's grove, near the penitentiary.
Here they lunchedand laughed. Laugh
ter and jests from throats only sixteen
years old is better than hair-dye for re
newing youth. It makes the heart
young. When that is done, the wholo
man is renewed. Mrs. Mosher chaper
oned the party who were: Miss Mildred
Parks, Miss Nellie Watson, Miss Helma
Bombgardner, Miss Louise McWhinnie,
Miss Emma Dal by, Miss Branson.
