fr S- R ?i I. L, POfolTIGAfe NOTES. BIS II DOZEN McCandless and Gould will in all probability be renominated. Hartely and Dawson are the two can didates for county clerk in Bennett. John 0. Cunningham has been busy among th boys this week. He is a popular candidate. Elmer Spencer's popularity as a justice of the peace stands him in hand hb a candidate for county judge. The are two candidates for county clerk down at Bennett, and there will probably be a tight for the delegation. C. M. Branson of Yankee Hill, is a candidate for clerk of the district court. He is one of the last to enter the race. A vigorous effort will probably be made to secure the election of Judge Tibbets by the populists and democrats. year the Bryan democrats may There is a fair sized list of candidates make much of a demonstration. If candidates in the Fifth, and so on with Cornish and Caldwell. The judges will be named first, and the convention will then proceed with the other nomin atians as though no candidates had been chosen. The newspapers have said that the democratic state convention will beheld in September. An interesting question arises in this connection. Last year there wap a split and in the sundering process not much was left of the party, yjy rrVT DDA'Q An effort was made to discredit the ()f"jP J DIvL Bryan iree silver Taction, but tne laiur set up the claim that they wen the regular democratic party. Just how things stand this year, nobody seems to know. But little interest is felt in the corpse of democracy. The adminis tration followers will, however, be pretty sure to secure recognition as tho official democratic uarty. The CocniEi: said last week that A. D. Burr would shortly make himself felt as a factor in the Fifth ward scrap, and this caudidate for clerk of the dis trict court is just now making good our prediction. Little is heard in the city about the county suprintendency of schools save that J. S. Baer ought to be re nominated. And Baer has many frienus throughout the county who are desirous of having him again on the ticket. One candidate for judge and two candidates for regent of the univer sity, one to be nominated at the coming state convention. The terms of Regents Morrill and Knight both expire this year. The former will probably be re nominated. There will be a meeting of the repub lican state central committee in this city August 7th, at the Lindell hotel, at which time the date and location of the state convention will be fixed. The convention will probably be held somo time in the latter part of August. Maxey Cobb, in his first term as county treasurer, has developed ad ministrative ability of a high order. He has given close attention to the impoitant business of this office, and has made an excellent record for efficiency. He is a competent and popular officer, and his re-nomination by acclamation will be a deserved compliment. The office of coroner seems to be lost sight of in the scramble for the more important county offices. Dr. Winnett, the present incumbent, who was ap pointed to fill Dr. Crim's unexpired term, will probably be a candidate; and it is said that James Heaton and W. B. Roberts would take the nomination, not ueceesarily far what there is in it but to strengthen the ticket. Many people believe, as we have fre quently said, that the selection of the candidates for judge of the district court should be made without refer ence to political considerations, such as location for instance; and it is probable that at the convention after the three judges are named, the candidates for HE'S GOING TO HAVE A WHEEL. Of all the great inventions Of thus enlightened age Tho greatest is tho bicycle, And it is all the rage. Tliore's many a queer contrivance I don't know which is best But Just give mc a cycle. And you may have the rest. The telephone and printing press Are handy in their way. J ut they can't hold a candle To the cycle of today. The engine and the telegraph Both would be sadly missed, Bnt if you want to have a time The cycle heads the list. They're used by people great and small And people of all sorts, The doctors and the ministers, The lawyers and the sports, The crooks and cranks are riding them. The politicians too. The highwaymen of Hongkong And tramps of Kalamazoo. Then the ladies even use them And wear divided skirts. The girl upon her cycle Oft with her lover flirts. Staid matrons look askance at her And fain would stop the 6how Of neat propelling feet and limbs As maidens come and go. Although I am not one of theso A cycie 1 will get, Bnt as I'm short of ready cash I don't know how just yet. I'll beg or beat or borrow. Do anything but steal, I'll peddle, or I'll speculate I'm bound to have a wheel. I may be very foolish. Some say I am "dead wrong," But I will faco the universe In this, my solemn song. No doubt I'll take a tumble And may perhaps get hurt. But I will have a cycle if I have to sell my shirt.
