All the week the Oriole Opera Com pany has been presenting light opera at the Funke. A few weeks ago Mr. Zehung in the Spooner Co ripany, gave us tne first popular price dramatic or ganization known to the west, and now in the Orioles we have in all respects, the most meritorious and deserving opera company that has played in Lincoln at popular prices. Beatrice and Goldie Rinehart are well known in Lincoln and they aro this week appear ing to better advantage than ever be fore. They are supported by other singers and comedians who give to such operas as "Said Pasha," "Chimes of Normandy," etc.Iife and go, not unmixed with genuine melody. Beginning with "Said Pasha" Monday night the operas have been adequately staged and intel ligently sung. The thirty people in the company have strived to do their best, and when it is considered that the per formances have been given at popular prices, the result has been most satis factory. This afternoon at 2, "Mascot" will be presented and tonight the en gagement will close with "Erminie." of annual convention Republican National league. MONKEY, MONKEY, BOTTLE O' BEER. "When we wore boys, long years ago, And played the games that we all know As "fox and geese" or "blind man's buff, Or other games that were more rough. We had the queerest way to find Who'd be the fox, or who would blind This was the way 'most every time Someone would say this odd, old rhyme: Monkey, monkey, bottle o' beer, How many monkeys are there here? One, two, three, out goes he. In after years when youth had flown And we to older men, had grown When life had brought us tears and cares And sin had spread its luring snares. When fame was blighted, love was dead When strength was going, hope had fled, Old Fortune stood the self same way And counted out day after day: Monkey, monkey, bottle o beer How many monkeys are there here? One, two, three, out goes he. And when the heart beats faint and slow When hair grew white as winter's snow When heads were bowed and backs were bent, With the weary load that life had sent, When tottering step and sightless eye Proclaimed the end of life was nigh Old death repeated, solemn, slow: Monkey, monkey, bottle o' beer, How many monkeys are there here? One, two, three, out goes he. William Reed Dunroy. WHAT MAY BE LOOKED FOR. Customer "I want the works of Byron, Shakespeare and Homer." Book Clerk "Yes, ma'am. No one knows just how many lovers of the game wo have here and a census is now in prep aration. Lincoln has never taken proper notice of tennis and it is hoped this seaason will prove the beginning of better things. It is reported there were 1700 Lets in use at one time on the opening day in Central Park. Tb? pioneer of local tennis, Mr. S. L. Geisthardt, is at last getting some des erved appreciation from the press of the city as the following from the pen of the Journal poet, Mr. A. L. Bixby will amply testify. When Lawyer "Gouty" first came down Upon this mundane sphere The busy peoplo of the- town Were almost allocked to hear His infant voice in rapture raise Boforo he knew his namo To sic? tho everlasting praise Of tennis as tub game. Now days at tennis ccurt I sit and watch the play. Where "Geisty" always leads the sport In his peculiar way. And when I reach that upper "lawn" I shall not like the "hence" If "Geisty" with lib sweater on Is not in evidence. Notices were sent to the different clubs throughout the state asking those who are to contest in the coming tour nament to have their entries in by yes terday, Friday, so that a full program and other details can be arranged in ample time for the battle which com mences Monday. Games will probably be played both morning and afternoon. The contest is open to the players of the state, irrespective of whether they be long to any club or not and it is hoped that many who have taken no active part heretofore, will avail themselves of the opportunity. Some noticeable improvement isshown in the individual work of local players. Munger is back in the game and is the author of a new stroke entirely his own. Jones continues to improve and Cantield is doing his very best work of the season. The university boys are re ported as getting in a good deal of prac tice, and interest in the coming match is constantly increasing. DISCOVERED.
