Mr. and Mrs. James II. Patton have gone to Chicago. The W. E. 0. Cooking club will be entertained by Miss Clara Leese this afternoon. This club is composed of nine jolly girls, who meet every two weeks ond enjoy a luncheon prepared by themselves. The members are: Misses Sue Bartrum, Sallie BerkBon, Helen Dorothy; Bertha DuTeil, Bernice Merrill, Mable Parish, Jessie Greedy, Clara Leese and Rosa Kohn. Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Wilson have returned from St. Louis. a Miss Alice Farrington, who has been spending the summer in New York, has returned homt. Mr. John I. Underwood is in Denver. Mrs. R. H. Oakley has returned from Denver. R. N. Keener, Rev. Sidney Mills and Rev. W. M. Adams have gone to St. Louis. Mrs. S. T. Osgood, of Massillon, Ills., is the guest of Mrs. S. C. Q. Upton, at 1525 H. street. Misses Ferguson and Evans have opened a dancing school at the Lansing hall. R. Forrester has gone to Pueblo, Colo. J. M. Woods, A. D. Ritchie and Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Chapenhof t left for El Reno, Oklahoma on Tuesday. Mrs. A. H. Weir has gone to Chicago for a three weeks' visit with friends. ' The Dante club met at Miss Elliott's residence Wednesday morn ing. Mesdames Fossler, Scott and Johnson read the cantos. The "Book Review"' club is certainly composed of ladies who defy even the wind and heat of Nebraska, for despite the intense heat of the summer they regularly met every Tuesday morning to review some late book. During the summer they reviewed "Marcella," "Life of Ruskin," Tennyson, "Art and Relation to Modern Life," and a number of other books, and Tuesday morning at the home of Mrs. McCreary "The Ascent of Man" by Drummond was ably reviewed by Mrs. A. R. Ricketts. This was followed by a general discussion of the book, after which dainty refreshments were served. The members are: Mesdames Imhoff, Leavitt, Richards, Sawyer, Garten, Ricketts, Stein, Lamb, Green, Sewell, McCreary, Smith and Hardy. E. W. MacDonald has gone to Florida to spend the winter. J. B. McDowell, of Fairbury, was in the city during the week. J. B. Wright returned Tuesday from Chicago, where he was called by the sudden death of bis brother, The reception given Wednosday ovening by tho Epworth League of St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal church was a pleasant, affair. The large rooms were filled tho entire evening and delightful music was furnished by the orchestra. The Nebraska conservatory of music was brilliantly illuminated on Wednesday evening in honor of the fifth anniversary of thoopon ing of the institution. Two large headlights wore placod on the tower and a device over the main entrance bora the name of the conservatory and the dates "1889-1894." Every room in tho build ing was lighted and the porches were bright with rows of Japanese lanterns. At ten o'clock the guests gathored in conservatory hall, where Rev. F. S. Stein entertained them with a bright talk on music and the conservatory. The 3 tho Mendelssohn orchestra of thirty pieces appeared- and rendered some delightful music. Be tween the selections Gen. Thayer and Dr. 0. C. Lasby spoke highly of the school and of the orchestra. A pleasant informal reception in the parlors closed the celebration. The Society of the Hall in the Grove met at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Stein last Friday evening. There w.is a full attendance. Tho history of France up to the timo of Charlemagne was the subject of discussion during the first part of tho ovening and was led by Miss M. E. Stevens. Mrs. Thomas Sewell followed and clearly outlined the causes of the war in Korea, also the character of tho Koreans, Chinese and the Japanese and their respective governments. A general discussion of the subject followed. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. C. L. nail 1510 K street, October 19. Frank Henry Woods and Miss Nell Shrove Cochrane, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Cochrane, will be married Friday evening October 19 at half past six o'clock at tho St. Paul M. E. church. The wedding cards announce that they will bo at homo after De cember 1 at 2003 F street. There is some talk about a mysterious wedding to take place in Trinity church within two weeks. Curiosity is rife as to whether there is to be a wedding, and if so, as to the identity of the high contracting parties. The old Clark residence on P street between Eleventh and Twelfth, transformed into a beautiful club house for the Commer cial Club, was thrown open to the members of the club and their friends Wednesday evening. The building which has been refur nished throughout, and handsomely furnished, presents a most at tractive appearance. On Wednesday evening it was rendered addi tionally attractive by reason of handsome decorations, etc. Brown's orchestra furnished music throughout the evening. Guests wero received by Messrs. E. R.
