TheCocrier this week publishes the batting averages of the Lincoln Club including the game of Wednesday. Omaha, who has more pitchers than any other club in the associa tion, has got still another one; his name is Abbey and he comes from Chicago and in his first game he showed up in fine form and will do much to pull the Omahas out of the hole. If Pequigney is released he will find no trouble catching on with some one of the other clubs as he is without doubt the fastest short stop in tbe Western Association and the only cause that can be given for nis release is the fact that he is unable to hit the ball at the proper time. In conversation with The Codkiek, Louie Baltz declares that he will quit base ball at the end of this week and will accept a position in the sheriff's office at his home in California. Louio haB many friends who will be sorry to have him leave but all are glad to know that he is getting a good position. During this year Lincoln has had the following players on its pay roll: Lawrence, Devereaux, Pequigney, Ebright, Hughes, Sullivan McCarthy McKibben, McCann, McGreavy, McQuaid, McMakin Lookabaugh, Speer, Mertes, J. Johnson, Youngy Johnson, Barnes Kimerer, Ayfei, Dunn, Corbett, Baltz, Wood, and the three new men, Whitehead, Sweeney and Powers. There has been several changes in the make up of the clubs of the Western association during the past week and nearly every club in the association is doing something to strengthen its make up. St. Joe has four new men. There are Kling, Feenan, Graney and Tub Welch, who will be remombered in Lincoln as the big catcher, who, during the season of '87 played with Leavenworth. Jacksonville has a new catcher who hails from the Eastern League, his name is Lohbeck. Peoria has signed Red Armstrong who was replaced on the St Joe team by Tub Welch. Manager Flynn has gone east to look for some pitching talent Quincy is still in hard luck, Munyan, who is one of their best men, being laid up from the injury he received dur ing the game here Monday. While all these clubs have been getting new players Manager Ebright has not been asleep. He has signed three of the best infielders of the Eastern League, namely. Powers, Whitehead and Sweeney. Powers will replace Jimmy Sullivan at firet base. Whitehead will go to third and Sweeney will tak3 up his position as short All of these players are sluggere and with the ex ception of Whitehead have never been seen in Lincoln. Whitehead will be remembered as the third baseman who played in Leaven worth during the season of '86. Pete Sweenew is an old timer having played in the national league. Mrs. James Brown Potter has three days at Boyd's Omaha, next week. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. John Drew will appear in "Butterflies. at the Boyd, Omaha, Mon day, Tuesday and Wednesday, September 3, 4 and 5. Madeline Pollard will mcke her first appearance in Chicago in October. The play selected is Tennye, a comedy drama. Corbett will appear in a new play about January 1893. The title will probably be A Naval Cadet. One of the scenes will be a sensational rescue in mid-ocean. Another is an episodo in the Quartier Latin, Paris, iD which Corbett will have a set-to with a Parisian tough. Corbett is o make a tour of Europe next year. An open air performance of As You Like It will be given August 27 at Frank Mayo's home, Crockett Lodge, near Canton, Pennsyl vania. Mies Rose Coghlan will appear as "Rosalind," Mr. John Kellardas "Orlando," Mr. Mayo as "Jaquss,"' and Mr. Wm. G. Beach as the "Banished Duke." Paderewski's third tour in America will bagin at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, Do:ember 27, after which he will play in the following cities: Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Lou'iBville, St. Louis, Kansas City and Denver, opening in SanFrancisco on or about January 20, afterward taking the principal cities on the Pacific Coast; thence to Salt Lake City, Denver, Omaha, St. Paul, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago Pittsburg, Baltimore, Washington, followed by the principal cities in the east. The Marie Tavary Grand English Opera Company, which opens its season early in September at the Park Theatre in Brooklyn will interpret the largest repertoire ever attempted by a grand opera organization. Manager Charles H. Pratt during the forthcoming tour throughout the Uuited States and Mexico, will present twenty eight of the most celebrated works of the greatest composers. Among the more pretentious productions arranged are, Puccini's "Hanon Loscant', Aida, Masked Ball, Ernani, Norma, Romeo and Juliet, William Tell, L'Africanie, Dinorah, Magic Flute, Stradella, Lucia, Flying Dutchman, Hugenots, Tanhauser and others. The organization will includo chorus, orchestra and ballet. It will number almost one-hundred and fifty people and travel by special train. The list of artists in support of Madam Tavary were pub lished last week and embrace a liBt never excelled in English grand opera.
