It rumor is correct in its statements, tho young women are happy
over the grospect of a dining room exclusively for tho uso of the

Tuesday evening the Omaha Guards gave a very jolly hay ride out
to the Florence water works where dancing wes indulged in a picas

Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Bennett, Miss McKenna and Mr. M. Wilson
returned Saturday L-om Hot Springs in Manager Burt's private car.
Mr. Edward Smith of St. Joseph, spent Sunday in Omaha, the
guest of Mr. and Mrs. Henry W. Yates.
Mrs. Lewis S. Heed, and family and Miss Mabel Balcombe spent
the past week at Hot Springs.
General Cowan and family expect to move into their new home
the old Woodman house, the first of the month.
Mr. Henry W. Yates, Hallie Yates, Mr. Joseph Barker, Joe BarK
er, Mr. John Collins and Mr. Algernon Patrick left on Monday for a
fishing and hunting trip up to the northern part of Wyoming.

An exchange which has been looking up tho matter, presents
five theories of tho origin of the dollar mark (8), they being sel
ected from about twenty more or less plausable solutions:
1. That it is a combination of U. S., the initials of United
States.
2. That it is a modification of tho figure 8, tho dollar being
formerly called a "pieco of eight."
3. That it is derived from a representation of tho Pillars of
Hercules, consisting of two neodlo-liko towers or pillars connec
ted with a scroll. Tho old Spanish coins marked with tho pillar
device wore frequently referred to as "pillar dollars."
4. That it is a combination of "II. S.," tho ancient Roman
mark of money unit.
5. That it is a combination of P. and S. from peso dura, sig
nifying "hard dollar." In Spanish accounts peso is contracted
by writing the S over tho P and placing it after tho sum.
According to ono writer, tho symbol of tho dollar is a mono
gram of the letters "V. S." and "J," tho dollar being originally a
"thaler coined in tho valley of Saint Joachim, Bohemia and known
as a "Joachim thaler, and the monogram tho initials of the words
"Valley Saint Joachim."
The editor of Tlie London Whitehall Itevieic, a very able writer;
in giving his opinion of "Reason Number 3," as given above,
says, "The American symbol for dollar is taken from the Spanish
dollar, and the origin of tho sign, of course must bo looked for in
associations of Spanish coiiib. On the reverse sido of the Spanish
dollar is a representation of the Pillars of Hercules, and around
each pillar is a scroll with the inscription 'plus ultra.' This de
vice in the course of time has degenertaod
into the sign which it present stands for

pillars represents tho two serpents sent by Juno to destroy Her
cules in his cradle."
