The Cordul Kris Mad Before
Them AIL
At Katie's astcverationa that she
would tell th truth, I iiw cynical
little imile quirk the corners of Allen
Drake'! mouth, and' I felt a audden
impuUe to change that expression
with a well-directed slap. But my
father was speaking again, and I
turned' to listen, forgetting every-
tntng else in my pride of him and the
revelation he had just made.
"That ia what we want, Katie," my
father aaid ' kindly, yet there was
more than a hint of iron beneath the
softness of his manner. "You say
you didn't wish to listen but to be
sure that we were not in our rooms.
Why did you wish to be sure of that?
Did you wish to find out if there
was another f book like this some
where ?" '
. Katie Ia Defiant
With a quick movement he took
from the table the book he had
shown us from which the memoran
dum had been taken, opened it. and
spread it before Katie a astonished
eyes. She gazed at it blankly for an
instant, then she looked at my father
with an odd, tense gaze, which held
in if a touch of something inscrut
able, something which I decided with
a sudden quickening of my pulses
was not guilt ,
"Den you know,1 she aaid
slowly,. , . ... .
"Yes, we know that you took a
paper from this book," my " father
returned as measuredly. "But we do
not know why you. did it or what
you 'have done with the paper."
With a. dramatic movement Katie
swept the circle "of faces in front of
iter with, searching eyes. , xnen, sne
crept closer to my side and covered
my hand timidly with her own.. ,,'
"Quit ",'vpn" who " believe "poor
Katie," she said ' sorrowfully, and
again I saw the amused little quirk
of Allert Drake's lips.
Katie saw it, too.i and her- quick
temper flared. ,.
"You, Meester Drake,,r she sput
tered, "you- think yourself all de stew
but. you' nothing buj de soup greens,
I'll bet you nefer can find dot pa
per ef I -no-tell you." .
Though I secretly enjoyed Katie's
outburst, I conscientiously tried to
stop it. But -Brie finished her de
fiance triumphantly then at sight of
my1 father's ' stern face she wilted
miserably. -.,
"OhI Ohl I forget! I so ashamedT
she, wai)ed contritely.":
, v'v - G On( Katie.- ', -.
"Don't distress yourself on my ac
count, Katie," Allen Drake drawled,
and I saw that he really enjoved the
girl's -attack and' respected her for
it. ' "ItV refreshing to hear the
truth occasionally. And I grant your
assertion-- I have' nS idea where
your -simian mind has concealed the
'ooipers.' x But that the climax of
the third act is imminent, I can see
without the aid of spectacles.' So I
await your disclosure with intense
interest" ' A - -
That Katie did not understand his
words, I, of course, knew.'ahd was
incensed at Allen Drake for the sly
fun ,he was poking at the girl But
his tone evidently pointed his mean
ing to her quick preceptions,' for she
turned away from him-with a gesture
really superb m its ' disdainful de
fiance, and addressed Jierself to Lil
hafl. ,-. .. .,- .. .
"Meesis Underwood, you remem
ber vot I tell, you 4ot man say, all
dot stuff I tell yoitnot to tell?"
"Yes, Katie.".. , ,-. -v-
"I tell you -alt but von ting. He
tell me dot I .must get paper for
heem, say eet lee-tle paper mit all
kind? funny marks.. He tell me dot
I must look in efety, book, efery ting
in room. I have, awful times getting
chance to look; for dot old vomans,
and Meesis Harrison " dey always
snooping around after me, and ven
I get eet, I sh.QOst sit me down und
howl, for I no vjnt to geev eet to dot
man, und I not know how to keep
eet away from. Jieem. Eef I couldn't
find eet, he coom und hunt heem
self, und he keel me. He know ef
eryting you tink, dot man!" - .
She paused as if in reflection at
the diabolical powers- of the man
Anton, and I wished whimsically
that my mother-in-bw could - have
neard the girls reference to herself
and her daughter, Elizabeth. I re-
an
mi

mem oered most distinctly the .let
ter Mdthftr Graham - had written to
me. saying "that Katie was "snoop
ing all over the house, reciting the
aincrs room, ana savine that whra
Katie ' had finished, she had sat
down and "howled." Mother Gra
hntn had attributed the girl's emo
tion to her failure to find some
thing she wished to appropriate to
her own use, but my partisanship
and my : common sense as well
preferred Katies story to my mother-in-law
a theory.
"Go on, Katie," Lillian said en
couragingly. "Did you give the pa
per to the man?"
Katie swept us with a triumphant
glance. . .
."I give paper, but not dot one,"

Common Sense "
1 By J. J. MUNDY.
Are You Using Your Knowledge?
You feel that you are better edu-
catedi have more culture and refine
ment than men you know, who are
more successful than you have been,
ind you wonder why.
More than likely they have more
ambition, more active ambition. '
They think less of what others
think of what they are doing and
more of the real job at hand, being
satisfied if their efforts are along
honest and honorable, lines. .
They make full use of what they
know. ; .' '
Knowledge of little -value is elim
inated. . . '-. ... .
, What you have in your head does
not' amount , to anything unless you
use it, and it is the big, broad, fun
damental laws, rather than t details,
which should be kept uppermost.
it is to the man who is never satis
fied that he knows it all and who
studies .constantly to make more
knowledge his own,; that success
comes abundantly, if he uses what he
knows. ' " '
Lots of men are working ahead of
their mental capacity and education
al equipment, and are in responsi
ble positions, and keep them. .
Why? Because they think, and are
alert in their thoughts.
Parents' Problems
Should a boy of 14, beginning to
be much interested in politics, be'
taught his father's political belief; or
be told, impartially, about the several
different political' beliefs of our
country? -.- - - ' ':
A boy of 14 should beainl to take
an intelligent interest in current
events. He should be given a simple
direct account ot all the tacts in the
case, and should have it called to his
attention that all honest men may
differ, in opinion. Of course he will
want to know what his father thinks
about the matter, and should be told.
rerhaps there is an uncle who. while
a devoted member of the.family, still
belongs to the other political party.
This is an ideal condition of affairs
for the budding and questioning poli
tician. .
