late in the afternoon that he would
move to recess at 6 p. m. A number
of senators left before that time,
however.
Argument Waxes Hot.
Committee amendments disposed
of had to do with duties on table,
butcher and other knives, and scis
sors and shears. Before the senate
got down to the amendments there
was a lively row between Senators
Simmons and Gooding of Idaho,
chairman of the republican agricul
tural tariff bloc, about duties on ag
ricultural products.
Senator Simmons charged and
Senator Gooding denied that there
had been an agreemnt by which ag
ricultural products were given pro
tection in return for the support of
the agricultural bloc for high duties
on domestic products. Exchanges
between the senators became heated,
the Idaho senator declaring that it
twas "not true" that members of the
.block had entered into any agree
i merit and Senator Simmons retort-

anything."
Later there was another contro
versy between the majority and mi
nority when Senator Harrison, demo

senate reconsider its vote of last
.night removing cash registers from
the free list. Asserting that Fred B.
Patterson, president of the National
Cash Register company, was in
Washington when the senate was
voting, attending a meeting called by
the republican national committee,
"for the purpose of obtaining cam
paign funds,'1 Senator Harrison de
clared "the people can place their
own interpretation on his presence
here."

Retired Circus Dwarf
Dies at Age of 81 Years
Morgantown, W. Va., June 10.
"Major" Lewis Davis, retired circus
dwarf, died at his home in Granville,
near here yesterday, aged 81. For
more than 50 years "Major" Davis
traveled with Barnus & Bailey's,
Ringling Brothers a,nd Sells & Fore
paugh's circuses as a sideshow at
traction. He was 37 inches tall.
About 10 years aeo the "maior"
retired.
A month aco "Maior" Tlavlt marls
all preparations for his death. Select
ing tne attending physician and
undertaker, he chose the place where
he wished to be buried and picked
out the clothing in which he desired
to be laid at rest, a beloved old
"swallow tail" suit a relic from cir-'
cus days. He paid all funeral ex
penses in advance. Ten days ago he
suffered a paralytic stroke, which re
sulted in his death.
Crane Reterates Denial
of Anti-French Activities
New York, June 10. Charles R.
Crane, who recently was reported in
correctly to have been sentenced by
a French court to 20 years impris
onment in Syria for having attempt
ed to incite anti-French disturbances,
reiterated his denial of anti-French
activities on his arrival here yester
dav on the Aquitania.
While declaring that conditions in
Syria were bad and that the people
there and in Palestine could not be
reconciled to any kind of mandate.
Mr. Crane announced that he would
take no steps to bring matters to
the attention of officials in this coun
