On today's market nearly all active stocks de clined, some of thein two points or more, and sterling exchange crossed the long discussed $4.50 mark. Sell ing of stocks, apparently from pro fessional sources, began with the opening of the market. It had no obvious cause in new developments over the week end, unless one were to assume that the somewhat reiul tory inquiry into the "steel mergers" by various public bodies provided such a cause. As a matter of fact, all the mereer stocks were weak, even Bethelehem and Lackawanna steel losing i and l'i points, respectively, while de. dines of Y point in Midvale steel snd 2 points in Republic Iron and Steel brought those participants in the latest amalgamation plan four points or more below the prices which ruled on the day before the announcement that the papers had been signed.- fhaagea Irregular Thla need not be Internreted to mean the blocking of the merger.
