She elsp:ed her hand on my thout 'Irr at the paed me with a pile of uickye inula on one aim. "Honestly, there it a little drill and blood left in me," the laughed banterinaly. I think I'll rtruBgle along on your word of honor," I laid laugh ing. "But you might at lrat tell me when vou expect Allen Drake. You know Mother Graham will want to clean houte before Dad and he .get here." "Thal'a Just the reason why I'm not Roing to tell you." the retorted. "They're going to drop down on ut with but an honr'a warning if I can manage it. Then your mother-in-law won't have any time to ttage her well-known stunt of turning the house upside down, and as vou will be in complete ignorance of the hour of arrival, the can't possibly blame "" "Perhaps she can't, but she will," I mnrmered. "No. for I shall lay my devoted head upon her chopping block before she has time to catch you. But I'll give you one tip if your housewifely :il desires it. I'm just honing for P'ie of Katie's broiled guinea hen dinners about tomorrow night. Tell me. which of these thrift the Dicky bird will want?" I knew that there would be no use in asking another question, so I re turned to the important matter of deciding which of my husband's par torial possessions should he packed in the trunk for which he had asked. With Lillian's invaluable aid, and fre quent reference to Dicky's volumin ous telegram, the trunk was finally nacked. locked and strapped, and Ter- jv Ticer summoned to convev it to trie station and express it to Dicky's studio. Not until then did I give myself time to plan for the coming of my father, and his brilliant companion, whom I had found at once fascinat ing and antagonistic at the rare in tervals when I had seen him. Not even a hint did I dare give Katie that we expected guests, and I thanked mv housewifely stars that the day of trunk packing was that of the girl's weekly cleaning. . Unob trusively I followed her about, giving the finishing touches to my father's room and the guest room, which I exnected to assign to Allen Drake. I did not dare , to put flowers in either room, for fear of my mother-in-law's argus eye?, but I saw to it that all my vases and baskets below stairs were filled with the late au tumn .blossoms, a custom of mine which occasions no comment. And I counted upon LillianV promise of an hour's warning to make attractive with welcoming blossoms the rooms of the travelers. ' Mv crowning achievement of Machiavellianism, however, was in regard to the dinner. The morning of the next day I sat down in Moth er Graham's room with a little exas perated sigh. "Oh, Mother, do tell me something new and good to have for dinnerl I'm hungrv. and we seem to have the fame things over and over." Se rose to the bait at once. "That's 'because you let that ape of a Katie do so much of the nlan ning of the meals." she said. "Now. Jet me see, what haven t we had? I wr she said triumphantly. Those young guinea hens in the barnyard ought to be just about right. I'd fancy some of those broiled and then to o with them we ought " She outlined a delicious and elabor ate dinner, to which I assented, and reported to Lillian enthusiastically. "The darting old gourmet!" she re sponded. "Now, mind you, I'm not saying anybody hut ourselves is go ing to eat that dinner. You'll have your alibi when I spring the news on your mother-in-law." I A. Silly Song ' C a nirvnn Bipn A man with a job, and his heart in Ms task, is the very best asset a nation can ask. For he never climbs upon a box in the street, and lambasts his country with fervor and heat. He has no time, whatever, to listen to cranks who want to divide all the cash in the banks. He never slips cut of an alley at night and brains, with a blackjack, some unlucky wight. He doesn't set fire to the plant of his boss, and chuckle in glee at the millions of loss. As long as he's busy, he never gets blue and he don't care if others are prospering, too. Tite very best bulwark a nation can ask, is the man with a job and his heart in his task. Parents' Problems How can a child's jealousy of the new baby be overcome? By making it plain to the child that the new baby is partly hers. From the very beginning, the baby should .be spoken of as "ours." If she realizes that the little brother is rot something new and dear of father's 'and mother's, but of thcir's and her's, she will feel no further jealousy. FUNERAL DIRECTORS. F. J.
