Steel Corporation
Report Optimistic
New York, April 25. Slow but
certain recovery from the extreme
depression of 1921 iit the steel and
iron industry, was indicated by the
statement of the United States Steel
corporation for the first quarter of
the current year issued today.
Not all of the preferred dividend
for that period was earned and the
director had to take $6,794,468 from
the undivided surplus to meet the
$12,658,700 required to pay the regu
lar dividends on the preferred and
common shares. . .
Total earnings of $19,339,985 com
pared with $19,612,033, in the previ
ous quarter, and net income of $10,-
ya,6Si6, was less by $346,316, leaving
a balance applicable to dividends of

statement are contained - in ' . the
monthly operations. Earnings for
January1 w-ete below those of . ..last
December, but February showed a
substantial recovery, and March im
proved by almost 40 per cent over
the previous month.

N. Y. Federal Reserve Bank
Income in '21 Shows Slump
New York, April 25. Net income
of the Federal Reserve bank of New
York in 1921 was more than 50 per
cent less than that of the preceding
year.
The annual report of the bank,
made public today, shows net income
of $26,093,832 in 1921, compared
with $53.1 28.130" in 1920.
"The reduction in the gross income
of the bank from $60,525,000 in 1920
to $34,705,000 in 1921," the report
says, "is attributable to a reduction
during1 1921 of 63 per cent in the
bank's earning assets, accompanied
by successive reductions in the dis
count rates from 7 per cent to 4SA
per cent."
Two factors contributed, the report
explains, to a steady decline of re-
;rve bank loans m I9il. 1 he tirst
as a reduction iii the credit require
ments of agriculture and business,
resulting from lower prices and
lessened . business activity, and the
second was a net importation of
$667,000,000 in gold during 1921,
most of which found its way into the
federal reserve system through the
local bank".

Nearly $30,000 Paid Back
to State Guaranty Fund
Lincoln, April 25. Refunds to
the state guaranty fund totaling
nearly $30,000 have been made
within the last 60 days from failed
banks at Valparaiso and Pleasanton,
J. E. Hart, secretary of the de
partment of trade and commerce,
stated today. A sum of $16,368 was
received from Valparaiso and $15,-
12 from Flcasanton.
