New oik, April .'. I his week
opened, as last week closed, with in
terest shifting from the stock mar
ket to other financial market, not
ably bonds and foreign exchange.
Half a doaen stock scored advances
of a point or more, but this happen
ra mumy on small transactions m
usually inactive shares, notably the
preferred stocks ot certain industrial
companies. In the greater part of
the market, changes were only frac
tional after a desultory business, and
many ot tnc eiianges were declines.
I his subsiding of activity and
strength m the stock market is
perfectly familiar phenomenon when
that market, haviiiir worked itself
into a high degree of excitement, is
Drought to a halt by some unexnect
cd news with doubtful implication
such as the Kusso-Gerniaii exploit at
Genoa a week ago. The character oi
the financial siluaiioir, the influence
which had invoked the previous spec
ulative enthusiasm, may not have
changed at all; it is merely the fact
mat tnc snecuator lias been compell
cd to stop and think, which, at such
times, puts at least a temporary
quietus on uau streets bull move
incut.
Klerllnr Ad.snre Karlr.
Th interest a hli h haa been taken In th
higher rale for Ih Important turupcu
aibans was baaed chiefly on Ih fel-
Ing that this market' action would ns
a kind of barometer of (ituncul semi-
mnl regarding th tienoa conference.
Thu considered, today a aarly advance
or atarling to II C". was at leat nrga
lively roaaurlug, for. although Ih ad
vane over Saturday's closing waa neither
large nor well aualaliied. It brought the
rale above any quotation reached slme
the Uenoa conference assembled in fart,
lo th h Ig beat level In aom seven week.
Kxuhange on Pans nearly regained US
high rats of ths preceding Monday, tut
attention waa more particularly attrac ted
to tn days recovery in in market.

Knerulallre Field Marrow.
Insofar a the recent recovery measure
th market' Idea of German s political
situation, It may bs based on Uermany'a
"deal" with Russia or on Lloyd iioorge's
vigorous efforts to bresk th dlplomstic
deadlock between Paris snd Rsrlin. The
second Inference would be sltogether the
mors reasonasl. for when Russia a en
ports In 1921 are reported by the Rus
sian commisnsrlrs themselves ss only 216.-
two tons and when more than one-third of
the 920,000 tons of Imposta came from
K'ng-land, against lex than one-fourth
from Germany, the field for special trade
advantagea must at least be described as
narrow. On ths whole, the movement of
the European exchange ratea Indicate
a hopeful spirit regarding the outcome at
uenoa, tempered, however, with great
caution.
There was no halt In the demand for
investment bonds, Uriwards of 30 for
eign or domestic losns reached or passed
their previous highest price. The en
hancement of values Is now psrtlrulsriy)
noteworthy In railway bonds, arrectlng
both divident paying rompaniea and rom
panles which have auapended dividends.
