With graphic vividne he told
how this so-called tyrant of Siberia
controlled three armored tram on
the transcontinental railway, train
which always left behind them a trad
of blood and gruesome deeds.
Mr. Clcland, who was field super
intendent of the United States postal
agency at Vladivostock, Siberia, took
notes on his experience abroad and
i has a comprehensive report of what
took place during the American oc
cupation in RtKiia. Regarding the
"butcher" mentioned in General
Morrow's telegram to Secretary
Hushes, he wrote:
Writes of Attack.
"The armored cars stopped just in
front of the American cars with
their machine guns along the sup
posed line of the bunks. The Ameri
cans, upon Vcig attacked, surged out
and fought from the ground with
rifle, pitol and hand grenade, and
before long the train began to back
way in the direction from which it
came, and was fired upon by the
Americans as long as it was within
range. An effort was made to put
the engine out of commission with
band grenades, and was partly suc
cessful. The Cossacks backed down
the line and getting our commander
cn the telephone offered to sur
render.
"They afterwards explained that
th American fire was so excessive
ind destructive that they were taken
by surprise. Our commander refused
to accent the surrender unless they
were willing to leave the train with
out arms and this they finally agreed
do after a short parley.
Loot of All Kinds.
"In the cars was loot of every
description, clothing of all 1 kinds,
boots, shoes, blankets, towels, soap,
stationery, books, perfume, pistols
and grenades. On the wall of the
officers car was a life-size picture of
SemenofT and near it a beautiful gold
pnd silver eikon image of the Greek
Catholic church."
At the time he reached this car,
Clcland said, the picture was partial
ly destroyed. He picked it up. cut
off the lower "part and brought it
with him as a souvenir. He also has
in his possession a breech block of
a three-inch armored gun mounted on
the train, as yvell as a saber used by
one of Semcnoff's men.

a loaded wagon which passed over his
