Accounting for the remaining $10,-

was expected that deductions
amounting to this figure would he
made in income taxes payable by
shipping companies. The bill pro

Naval Reserve Provided.
. The cost of maintaining the mer
chant marine naval reserve, which
would be created by the bill, would
1. -e defrayed from the merchant nia
line fund, the committees were in
formed, and would not cause an ad
ditional outlay from the treasury.
Cost of maintaining the reserve, Mr.
Lasker estimated, would not exceed
53.000.000 annually.
While passage of the bill would
require an expenditure of 552,000.
:H.I0 a year at most, the added burden
en the treasury, the chairman said,
would approximate $47,000,000 as
the government now expends $5,000,
1)00 of the amount which would be
turned into the merchant marine
fund for transportation of foreign
mails. Under the bill, vessels of
companies reoeiving the government
subsidy would be required to carry
the United States mails, except par
cel post, free of cost.
Mr. Lasker said that the maximum
he quoted would , be expended only
:n the event the bill "operates suc
cessfully" and even then, probably
not before live years.
