fortune of the narcissus. The carnation wanted
to be like the lily. The peach tree coveted the
happy lot of the apple tree and the apple tree re
garded the peach tree as more highly favored.
Wearied and worn with listening to the ex
pressions of vain regrets, the King halted beside a
bed filled with pansies "purple with love'a wound."
"And what," asked the King, "is your com
plaint?" "1 have none." replied 'the sweetest thing God
ever made andvforgot to put a soul into."
"But," said the King, "all of your associates
arc complaining. Why are you so contented?"
"I am created," said the Tansy, "for a purpose
and in seeking to give you service I am trying to
be the best and purest little Tansy I know how to
be."
Then the King said, "You have done me the
greatest favor, for you have given me a lesson in
contentment through efforts to render genuine
service; and that's the most important lesson which
men may learn."
