body, almost, could see him as he
crept through the stubble.
At night he ventured further from
home. And once he went as far as
the farmyard.
To his surprise he found that the
grass in Farmer Green's yard was
longer than lie had ever seen it.
Earlier in the summer, when Mas
ter Meadow Mouse visited that spot,
he had been afraid to cross the
lawn because it was clipped so short.
But now he could creep through the
thick green carpet and nobody could
see him, unless a waving grass' blade
happened to catch somebody's eye.
Everybody at the farmhouse had
been too busy with haying to spend
any time running a lawn mower.
Why not move to the farmyard?
The thought came into Master
Meadow Mouse's head. It seemed
to him that the farmyard would he a
line place to live. There was grain
scattered here and there, where
somebody had fed the hens. There
was the duck pond nearby, when he
wanted a swim.
"I'll come!" Master Meadow
Mouse decided. "I'll come if I
can find a good place for a nest."
Thereupon he began to look about
for a site for his new house. And
it wasn't long before he had found
one that suited him. When he saw
the woodpile, lie squeaked with de
light, i
"The very place," he cried. "I'll j
begin to build my nest tonight.
So he set to work. He carried
dead leaves and dried grass to the
woodpile, and started to make a snug
home for himself in a space between
the logs, well inside the heap of
wood. And he had just crept from
a chink and stood under the stars
when a tiny voice greeted him with
a cry, "What ho, stranger!"
Master Meadow Mouse looked
around. And there on a stick of
wood just behind him .was a plump
gray person. The newcomer looked
the least bit like Master Meadow
Mouse himself, except that his tail
was ever so much longer.
"I'm Moses Mouse and I live in
the farmhouse," said the gray gen
tleman. "I'm Master Meadow Mouse, and
I'm going to live in this woodpile,"

The woman whom I married is a
treasure, I'll admit. All the water
she has carried, all the kindling she
has split: on my every 'need she's
waited, all the chores she's gladly
aone, since tue day tne parson stated
that she and I were one. But she
has one fault gigantic, that makes
me tear my hair, that drives me
nearly frantic and fills me with
despair, liach day she moves the
table, the safe and music box; and
I am never able to find my other
socks. They should be in the dres
ser, I search for it in vain, until, next
day, God bless her, she moves it
back again. And when I wander
home at night to tumble in the hay
I find, when I turn on the light,
she's, moved my bed away. In everv
month's duration, in the shanty that
I own, all things must change loca
tion but the bath tub and the phone.
Some day, in exasperation, I will
nail to the floor everything in its
location till it can be moved no
more. Then when I hunt the table
I won't find the couch instead, and
my wife will not be able to dis
locate my bed. '

The home atmosphere in this book
is elevating, and after intimate asso
ciations with the May brothers and
sisters, the little girl was much less
ready to be resentful and unforgiving.

of things that must be adjusted ht

that Lillian's loving supervision

Mother Graham was safe in the care
of those sane capable hands, while
Dicky's more or less erratic attempts
to help would also be made of use
by Lillian I also knew. So, at last,
the final detail completed, and with
small bag packed for my journey, I
lay down to a few hours' sleep be
fore time to go to the train.
I intended to drive my own car to
the train, taking Jerry Ticcr with
me to drive it back. But when I
rose from the substantial breakfast
which Mrs. Ticer had prepared, and
went out on the veranda, I found
Dicky's car, with Dicky himself at
the wheel, standing by the steps. ;
He was frowning, and the tonneau
door was open, indicating that Tie
did not intend me to ride on the
seat with him, so that I knew he
was still angry. But my heart leaped
at the knowledge that Dicky would
not permit me to go to the station
without him.
. With conjugal clairvoyance I also
khew that he was as anxious as T

He obeved. hut did not turn
around. So I clambered out of the
tonneau. then with a quick move
ment swung open the front door,
climbed in beside him, reached past
him, and turned off the ignition
switch, smiling with meaningfu!
