market wag lower on reports of Kau

and show in an improvement in the

cent rains. There was good buying
on the break, induced by the report
of the Modern Miller that more rain
would be needed in the southwest
and final prices were close around
last night's.
There was a stov demand for cash
wheat in the local market and prices
were 3c to Sc lower. Corn was
fairly active at lie to lc lower. Oats
sold otl J4C to lc. Rye was 2c to oc
lower, while baric v was lc lower.

Chicago, Feb. 24. Beats had an
inning in the wheat market early,
but came to grief Ix'ftire the cloe.
A break of 2 5-8C-T2 7-Kc resulted in
a liberal export bti.sincM, so the
close was at the top, with a tid
gain of 3-4c on the May, while July
was l-fc lower. Corn showed a
strong undertone throughout the day.
It closed at the best tigtires on the
crop, with gains of 7-8(,l t-4c, while
oats were l-4c lowed to 1-Nc higher;
rye unchanged to l-8c lower.
Further rainfall in the southwest,
with the forecast for unsettled and
warmer, combined as a market factor
with an early lack of export busi
ness. An easier tone in Liverpool
was responsible for ratlirr general
early selling. 1 rade was materially
smaller than of late. Many of the
local professionals who have been
bullish sold out on the way down,
Mav touching $1.41 j-8 ana juiy
$1.22. Many of the pit element went
short tinder JI.42 for May. 1 here
was a decidedly bearish feeling at
the inside figures.
Offering Absorbed.
Offerings otl the brisk were absorbed
by strong commission houses and by ex
porters who wer remnvlnir hedges
ncalnst export sales. The decline re.
suited in sales nf hIioohI 1.2..O.0H0 bush,
els: of that 720.000 bushels were domostlc.
This absorbed th surplus In the pit.
When shorts started to cover they found
little for sale, a bulge of 3fi3c from
the bottom following, with the close at
th top.
Liverpool finished ,4ffaid lower. A
better milling demand was In evidence
here, with esles of 30.000 bushels. Some
of the low grades were up 2(f3e com
pared with the bids of the previous day.
Receipts wero 24 cars. The Russian re
lief bought 20.000 barrels nf flour on the
Pacific coast for direct shipment. Crop
reports from the southwest generally were
more favorable.
The brenk In wheat and oats had s dc
prlng effect on corn early, forcing a
decline of r?ie from the previous day's
flnlxh. hut the surplus In the pit was
absorbed by strong commission houses.
There was a scramble on the part of
snorts to cover later. There was also
some buying by bulls who sold out early.
At the toD prices wer 11C over
the early low.
Country offerings remain small and ex
port demand keen with sales here of
over 500.ODO bushels, while the seaboard
claimed 200,000 to 300.000 bushels had
been sold abroad. Receipts 342 cars ond
the movement is expected to decrease
steadily from now on. Argentine crop
reports were loss favorable, with confirm
ation of damage by locusts snd drouth. ,
Liquidation was on In oats early as
the result of the recent heavy selling by
longs, but when other (trains rallied oats
followed and closed firm. Lxport de
mand was strongly In evidence with
sales here of 300,000 bushels. Receipts
83 cars.
Rye was weak early under scattered
selling, but the east became a free buyer
and caused a strong r;i!!y. There were
sales of 25,000 bushels mads to the sea
board and the latter reported 50.000
bushels sold abroad. No. 2 on track sold
at 6o under May.
Pit Notes.
The Russian relief commission bought
30,000 barrels of flour, according to a
Seattle message to Clement Curtis.
The shipping demand for corn was
moderate, but shippers reported a little
more business In export sales.
The Modern Miller said: "Winter
wheat has been benefited by rain in
practically all sections of the belt. Much
more moisture Is needed Jn southwest to
bring about thorough relief. Some ap
prehension In sections because plant; did
not show response to recent mild weather.
In other districts the fields greened up
nicely. Can not be determined yet what
percentage of the acreage, will be
abandoned. Soil conditions in the Bprimr
wheat territory in tho northwest have
been aided by recent snowfall."
Bids for wheat, track gulf ports, were
on the lowest basts on tho crop which
would Indicate an extremely limited de
mand for export, although some business
has been worked the last few days.
Early sellers of wheat were Armour.
Bache and Updike. Hellman and some
of the local traders were also on the
selling side.
New York wired: "There are few good
offers here this morning from tho United
Kingdom and, providing exporters aro
able to get freight room, business will
develop,"
"One rainfall after six months of
drouth does not restore normal conditions
nor does it replenish the supply of old
wheat," said Thomson and ! McKinnon.
"But these conditions touch upon th
future. Just now the cash situation at
home ts receiving more attention. The
extreme discounts of southwest markets
will have to be overcome before the
market again becomes healthy."
Message from Seattle to Logan and
Bryan: "Cash wheat and futures closed
2c higher, prices tl.271.40 for ordinary
grades. Blue stem sold at $1.65 and No.
t dark hard at $1.70. It Is said that the
United Kingdom has bought considerable
wheat for the last week and there is
good milling demand with good milling
grades scarce."
Broomhall cables: "There were further
reports that the new Argentine corn crop
In the province of Santa Fe and Cor
doba Is unfavorable, the recent drouth
and th visitation of locusts having dam
aged the crop In these sections material
ly. Prices for corn hold steady to firm.
There will be a holiday In the Argentine
todorrow and grain markets will be
closed."
