We had hardly steamed out of New York harbor one sunshiny foggv day until it became known that 'll. Cf. Wells, the writer, was on board. My first glimpse cf him was that evening, when we found some tfcain in the reading room. At a desk nearby a man of pleasant ap pearance, in gray, tweed, was sitting, writing ana immikiuk. Now, everybody knows that when a ncrson writes social letters one never stops to think at all. So, "Aha." said I to me. I peeked over his shoulder and saw little additions and corrections at the side. But jnst as I gave his manuscript a searching look he turned and gave me one, and I promptly departed. Later I met him, and several of us were standing in a group which in cluded among others Mr. Wells, Mr. Adolf Ochs. the publisher of the New York Times, and Mrs. 'Ernest Thompson Seton, when a steward tame along with the news that the Irish treaty had been ratified. Everyone expressed satisfaction, and in speaking of the two countries Mr. Wells said that while one heard a great deal about England not be- ADVERTI8EMK.NT. At the first sign of a cold, fever, sore throat or that grip feeling consult your doctor. But, above all, try to keep your nose and throat protected day and night by an antiseptic cream. Flu germs are literally breathed into your system. An antiseptic cream is used to keep the germs from lodging in your nose or throat. For this purpose get from your druggist aUonce a bottle of Ely's Cream Balm. Insert a little into the nostrils and draw it through all of the air passages so it reaches the throat. Do this as often as may be re quired to keep nose and throat anti septic Do it the last thing at night and first thing in the morning until the flu epidemic has passed. Head colds and catarrh yield like magic to this antiseptic, healing cream that soothes swollen, inflamed membranes of nose and throat. Your clogged nostrils open right up and you can breathe freely. Mr. wells said that the future held much of promite in the relation of both countries. That is all 1 heard him say that was seriou. but hji conversation sparkled with rare English wit. The Adriatic is said to be a steady uoat, as steady as any boat that puts to sea. It is, but what is under neath it is not so steady. The third day out we struck a severe storm, the wind whistled and blew, the waves waved and roared and dashed over the decks. By morning 75 per cent of the people on board were sick. 1 awoke my trunk tell over into my berth, depositing three books, ct cetera, upon me. As I was thinking about it the bugler played the rising call, and it was a most inappropriate time to notice that each phrase of the melody rose and that it ended up in the air. To make a long story short, l had tour sieges of dressing, and about 11 o'clock I dragged my light and bil lowy carcass outdoors, and thought how strange it was that a thing that weighed so little could be so heavy. But once on deck, I improved rapidly and postponed that experi ence which is said to have no sting. The rest of the trip today v has been swell, literally, and while the sky has been clear we have rolled and pitched and jiggled and gone up and down and sideways about as much as we have forward. A steward will reply to the re mark, "It is windy this morning," with a "Ho, just a bit of a yawl, ma'am," flavored with an accent and inflection which is only inherited. I overheard a southern lady telling the bath steward, "Oh, you English, yo all suttinly do put on the greatest amaount of style whenevah you talk, don't you." I haven't mentioned the gorgeous sunsets we have had, almost every evening, the bright moonlight (ac companied with a cold- damp tem perature that is not conducive to ro mance), -the friendly leaping por-1 poises that seem sometimes to try to race with the boat, drafts of air that can find you anywhere, nor the elder ly lady who was left on board and had to be put off on the pilot ship just out of New York harbor. But they were all part of it, too, and have played their part m the experiences of the voyage. All Ashore at Funchal. We had espied the peaks of Ma deira through clouds and desultory rain about 5 o'clock in the afternoon. The city of Funchal not only nestles in the bay at the foot of these voir canic peaks, but climbs high on the mountain side until a few last houses stand out ahead of the others in what seems to be a race toward the summit. In gala array we were about to at tend a ball at the Casino. As we went on deck a woman near the rail said, "My heavens, do we have to go down on that?" I pressed for ward, and had my first sight of an "accommodation ladder," a long, nar row flight of steps down the side of the boat, an interminable distance it seemed, to a small boat that bobbed like a cork at its foot. On the side of the ladder was a rope-and-canvas banister. 'The boat beneath held lights and men, and the black shad ows which crawled down the stair way were rapidly being unloaded upon it. I looked at the sea as it rose and fell under the lights from the Ardia tic. I looked at the little bobbing boat, the steep looking ladder. I saw myself dizzily tripping on the ladder and reposing, frozen, under the silvery black waves that rose and fell. I looked at Funchal, with its lights gleaming far up the mountain. The lights twinkled, so I decided that this was what I had come for, men tally kissed myself gootiby, and went down. We ascended steep streets not more than 10 feet wide, we clattered past row after row of houses built close to the street, with no sidewalk between, we skidded around corners, anl finally our small cavalcade en tered a gateway with parking of lux urious flowers, with palms and other tropical trees in artistic profusion. We had reached the Casino.. A Por tuguese orchestra played the latest American jazz for the dance and two roulette games were going where one bought with American or En glish money and was paid in Portu guese. It is said that one had to win 200 per cent in order to be ahead of the game, owing to the difference in exchange. A beautiful view of the city and the harbor were seen' frcm the small tables of an open court, where Madeira wine, was being free ly served. What Daylight Discloses. We were more charmed with- Ma deira in the daylight This time we took an automobile for the runicular railway. There seems to be no speed limits in Madeira, aid such hills as that car took and the speed with which we turned info narrow streets quite took our breath away.. We crossed a deep ravine which was walled high on both' sides and spanned here and there with pictur esque bridges. A rushing stream was at the botton, bubbling over stones and between grasses, and on the high walls great branches of poin settia stood out here and there, and a purple mass of bouganvillea or orange profusion of trumpet yine dazzled with Its wealth of color and beauty, The raiUay goes up It a chalet near the mountain top, a little putty engine giving you nervous pro.tra tion. as it almost forgets o wheeze at the back of the cars. Wonderfully beautiful panoramic - . , . , . . view oi sea anu tuy ana mountain were visible at the car progressed upward and at the chalet a rainbow stood vertically in a deep gorge, both ends of which we could tee. At the chalet there i a statue erected to the ditcoverrr of Madeira in 1419, the first tailor tf modern timet who ven tured to ail out to tea, the one who made Columbus later adventures possible. Some Real Mountain Sliding. We tobogganed down the moun tain tide to the city. Desn't that tound exciting? It really was, too, although I didn't think it would be at first when we started in our little wicker teat on runners, with two men holding tit bark with a rope on each tide. We tlid tamely at first, but certain places the guides ttood on the runners at the back and we whizzed along and made time. The road wound tterply down the mountain tide, and tometimet at turns we tkidded into the grass a few feet from the edge of a precipice, and it took much conversation in Portuguese and tome energy to right us. Sometimes we bumped into the toboggan in front of us if it stopped for any reason. Frequently along the way we passed other men ascend ing the path carrying the empty to boggans back upon their heads. Once we passed the-man-from-thc-ncxt table-on-the-boat and his wife, being carted up in a "reda, a hammock on a long pole, carried by a man before and aft. A few of us thought we would walk from the end of this toboggan trip to the great English Uotcl on the coast, where lunch was k be served, and our 20-minute walk became one of an hour and a half. Dr. Guthrie ended by saying: "He believed profoundly, therefore, he could conceive greatly and execute with austere audacity and brave tenderness."
