the inside' figures wheat was off
iic from the previous day's finish.
On the break there was excellent
buying, which absorbed the surplus
in the pit. A rally of Use from the
low point followed. The close was
at the top with net gains of 51c
Corn showed stubborn resistance to
selling pressure and gained 'A.yic,
with May leading, while oats were
unchanged and rye He higher.
I'rofit taking in wheat has been
strongly in evidence for three days,
but at the last May was within 6e
of the outside figures on the present
movement, and within that amount
of the high of October 14. Strong
commission houses were free buyers
and sellers, partly to take down
profits on wheat. Back spreading
and spreading between May and
July furnished a good part of the
trading at times. The difference at
the extreme was 15 cents, the widest
so far, with a reaction to W3c later
and with the finish at U)ic premium
for the May.
Foreign Markets Strong.
Foreign markets showed surprising
strength. Liverpool closing Id higher after
being d lower at the opening, and
Buenos Aires was up tTlc. the latter
market being; Influenced by good buying
by Germany. Cash wheat abroad con
tinues In demand and so far this week
export sales of around 3.350,000 bushels.
Including Manltobas, durum and bard
winter, have been reported.
Milling demand for cash wheat was
tlow, with premiums at Chicago decidedly
(,,uy, but a local mill paid equal to
11.48 for 40,000 bushels dark northern at
Milwaukee, equal to about 29o over May.
local shipping sales were 7,000, with re
ceipts 19 cars, the arrivals , coming from
a wide territory, with some from smaller
Interior mills. Eastern report Indicated
a better flour demand.
The trade Is commencing to pay atten.
tion to the continued drought in the south
west, the storm having passed over with
out affording any material relief in sec
tions that need It the most. Ice was re
ported as covering the wheat fields in
Ntbraska. and damage is feared. ,
Corn Strong Towards Last.
Resting orders to buy May corn at 63 So
could not all be filled. The market
showed a strong undertone from the start
and advanced toward the last on good
buying and closed within a fraction of the
tnp after a range of c. with May
leading. Cash demand was materially
slower, with seaboard bide on a lower
irasls and a. shading of spot prices was
noted In the sample market, as compared
with the May. Exporters took .106,000
bushels In all positions in the west. Re
ceipts, 546 cars. In three days primary
points have received 9,600,000 bushels,
auainst 3.600.000 last year .
Rumors of export sales of 300,000
bushels of oats at the seaboard could not
bo, confirmed. Trading In futurea was
blow and mainly of a local character, and
Iho finish was practically unchanged.
Shipping sales aggregated SAfl.000 bushels
with sample values unchaFtigcd to c
lower. Receipts, 108 cars.
Exporters failed to make satisfactory
bids for rye and the action of that market
was governed mainly by that of wheat,
the finish being firm. . No. 2 on track sold

Tit Notes.
The German food administration has
brought large quantities of plate wheat,
recording to Russell's News of New York.
The same agency quotes a leading- Ger
man importer as saying Argentine would
dominate the wheat market, as offers were
cheaper than of American wheat. Home
ccnsomptlon needs of Germany are said
to have been covered for a long time.
The new Australian wheat crop is turn
ire out smaller than the original official
estimates, according to a Broomhall cable.
The two principal states of South and
New South Wales show a decrease ot
22,000.000 bushels below laet year? Ex
portable surplus is now estimated at 80,
000,000 bushels, or 20,000,000 to 40,000,000
itushels under original estimates,
a The cash demand for wheat here from
mills is not at all aggressive, but reports
from the southwest said that northwest
mills were buying the choice wheat and
paying big premiums.
Pacific coast clearances of wheat are
quite liberal, being upward Of 1,000,000
bushels last week.
The receipts of corn continue larger
than looked for by many receivers. Tho
dimand at the present time is not broad
enough to absorb all the corn pressing for
Bale, In spite of the excellent export busi
ness. '
Stocks of wheat at Liverpool are now
760.000 bushels, against 904.000 bushels a
week ago, and nearly 7,000,000 bushela a
year ago. The small stocks there are
supposed to b one reason for the-iBtrong
markets.
The United Kingdom demand for .corn
has quieted down, according to Broom
hall. Liberal offerings ot American mixed
corn have filled u the neede of buyers
temporarily. . '
