Are You a Humane Employer?
An employer would consider it a
calamity, and he would expect pity,
if something should happen to cause
him to lose his business and source
of living revenue.
Many employers, however, think
nothing of discharging a man, tak
ing away his source of income, per
haps making it impossible for him
to earn anything for weeks and
months.
Losing a job at this time is as
serious to an employe as' it .would
be to an employer to lose his busi
ness usually more so, for employer
is not so near to starvation basis as
the employe in these times.
The man who sells his services
must consider them as stock in trade,
the same as a business man consid
ers his goods as his income earning
agency.
If a man has no money ahead it
is a serious matter to lose a job and
have to look for another position
and live while he is looking.
Employers should exerices thought
before sending a man out entirely,
and . do some planning to retain the
men who are earnestly trying to
cam what they are paid for.
Humane feeling on the part of em
ployers is needed now.

the Sheridan Coal company, was
sued for divorce in district court yes
terday by his wife, Nina, who charged
cruelty.
Mrs. MacBride alleges her hus
band disregarded his marital duties,
told, her he did not care for her and
frequently told her to leave him.
Mrs. MacBride seeks custody of
their only child, Jaqucline Jane, 4.
She further alleges he left her last
December 1. The MacBrides were
married August 10, 1916. They live

cial.) A wolf hunt was held between
Wood River and Doniphatij vv.d be
tween 1,500 and 2.000 men joined in
the drive. They killed four coyotes
and about 200 jack rabbits. This

Hen.
"She's a nuisance," he muttered as

you were brave." '

don't see why she wanted to bring
her chicks out here where Turkey
Proudfoot would see them. She's
landed me in a scrape. There won't
be much left of me when that old
gobbler gets through with me."
Nevertheless, the rooster put on a
bold front. Drawing himself up '.o
his tallest, he glared at . Turkey
Proudfoot and said shrilly, ."What
do you mean by annoying thij
lady?" -
Turkey Proudfoot gulped. He
wondered what had come over his
neighbors. The rooster had always
been afraid of him. Though small,
the rooster was strongly built. And
he had a sharp bill and sharp spurs,
too. Turkey Porudfoot noted those
details carefully.
"I won't have to fight him," he
thought. I'll behave so fiercely that
the rooster will be glad to run off.
And then I'll run after him so folks
will thnik I'm chasing him."
Turkey Proudfoot then began lo
bluster. He gobbled loudly, without
saying anything at all. And he even
made a few quick passes at the
rooster with his bill.
To his dismay, the rooster merely
dodged. He didn't turn tail and
run, as Turkey Proudfoot had hoped
he would,
"I'll have to try something else,"
Turkey Proudfoot said to himself.
So he flapped his wings and jumped
up and down and around the rooster.
The rooster was very ill at ease.
But he didn't let Turkey Proudfoot
know that. He kept turning ibout, so
that he faced Turkey Proudfoot all
the time. And he said to Henrietta
Hen: "Gather your chicks and get
them out of the way. There'; going
to be trouble here."
Henrietta Hen obeyed him iwthoiit
a word. ' And she had no sooner
shooed her youngsters into tho chick
en house than Turkey P;oi.dfoct
gave a loud lanh a somewhat
forced, yet loud lalgh.

"You're even sillier than I sup
posed," she informed the rooster, to
his great astonishment. He had Ex
pected nothing but praise from her.
He left her hurriedly. Aiid In

Yard at Lincoln Is Denied
Lincoln, Jan. 4 (Special.) Dis
trict Judge 11 J. Clements denied a
petition for an injunction by Lincoln
coal dealers agaist the operation of
"Brother Charley" Bryan's n unicipal
coal yard, established in Lincoln this
year.
