Story of Smith'i' Plans
That
Lillian Told Madge.
Before I had finished my recital
to Lillian of Robert havarin

ecu wen quit ot me uk,
Close, intimate friend a Lillian
and 1 are. there is always tome
thing about her which forbids any
reference to her own problems un
lets she herself fimt spe-ikt of them
And as she listened in a silence that
to my imagination appeared unne
rrssarily forebading, 1 wondered if
the did not consider my comment
an intrusion.
Something of 'this I tried to ex
press to her stammeringly when I
had ended my baiting recital.
. "Forgive me, dear" I felt that
my face was flaming "for repeating
this to you, but I felt somehow that
you outiht to know before you
talked to him. "
She smiled at me tenderly, but
with something in her face sadder
than tears. .
"Gratitude, not forgiveness, dear
girl," she said, "but this is nothing

tude, his jealousy for some time,
It is only one more complication
that is all. I hank you for telling
me this particular thing, however.
it -will help to know it beforehand,
And now, while we have the chance,
I want to tell you as much as I
may of what I have ' learned this
morning."
uie door ot that inner room in
side whose rigid walls Lillian keeps
the emotional part of herself locked
most of the time, and its lack
clicked audibly in my ears.. For an
instant I had seen -within, had
caught a glimpse of this "complica
tion she had named it which
was marring her autumual love idyl,
had counted Robert" Savann the
gentlest, the most devoted, self
abnegated of lovers. It shocked
and disappointed me to- find that he
could be as pettily jealous as Dicky,
as tyrannical in his attitude toward
her work as Harry Underwood had
been in his insistence upon her dye
ing her hair and using rouge.
My .heart ached lor my friend.
but I knew the only kindness I
could do her was to ignore that
locked door as she- was doing.
Therefore I dropped into a chair
and asked the question which
neither Dicky nor I had ventured
to .broach before, knowing that if
she thought it best she" would give
us whatever news' she had in good
season. But she herself 'had said
that she was ready. to talk, and I
knew no quicker means of shelv-
ng the tabooed subject of ' Robert
Savarin.
Have . they ' caught the man
Smith?" . . ';.
"No, they haven't yet," she said
slowly, and her enunciation of the
last word was significant -to me of
the long- relentless arm of the gov
ernment service. But he has been
effectually cleared out of this sec
tion, . his power' and influence re-.
duced to .zero, and his property
placed under - surveillance, so that ii
he. comes back to.it he will be apr
prehended. There is no other place'
where he possibly, can be in any de
gree as ' dangerous as he was up
here, and he ultimately will 1 e cap
tured, of course, if he doesn't get
out of the country."
She paused and looked at me
steadily. as if she were . debating on
how much to tell me. - -
"You might as well know what
was he was trying to do," she
said: "But there are threads to the
tangle, which I must still keep in
my own hands; so don't ask me any
questions you are always such a
dear about that, anyway, - Madge!'
But I shudder to think how near
you were to death last night. He
was completing his lonsr-conceived
plan 'to blow up the reservoir and
put New .York's water supply out of
business. He had enough high-

your sudden sitting up must have ef

I nodded an emphatic assent.

into. pint bottle, put llh ounces
of Pinex; then add plain granulated
sugar eyrup to make a full pint. Or
you can use clarified molasses, honey,
or corn syrup, instead of sugar syrup.
Either wjay, the full pint saves about

spent for , cough preparations, and
gives you a more positive, effective
remedy. It keeps perfectly, and
tastes pleasant children like it.
You can feel this take hold instantly,
