Order to Compel
Vaccination in
City Is Modified
Will Be Retired Only of
Persons or Other Public
Places Who Have Been Ex.
posed to Smallpox.
City Health Commissioner Dr. A.
S. Pinto yesterday withdrew hi
ureter of Monday for compulsory
vaccination of public school chil
dren and employes pf business
firms or institutions where people
congregate.
There is no smallpox epidemic in
Omaha, only four light cases havine
been reported. This is said not to
ie unsual at tins time of the year.
Attorneys advised that in the ab
sence of an epidemic the health com
inissioner's power to compel vac
cination was doubtful.
Dr. Tinto said yesterday that he
would require the vaccination of
persons in Dublic schools or other
places, who might have been ex
posed to smallpox.
The general vaccination was pro
posed by him against a possible
spread of the epidemic now preva
lent in Kansas City and Denver.
"I At not intend to f'ght or go
into court to require vaccination,"
&aid Dr. Tinto yesterday. "I ex-
pect co-operation. If anyone re
fuses to be vaccinated, then let him
take his chances on having small
pox." '
Dr. Tinto had addressed 300 let
ters to business institutions direct
ing that all employes should be vac
cinated. He announced orally in
connection with those letters that
the penalty for noncompliance would
be absence from work for a period
t.f 18 days, i Dr. Pinto now with
draws this announcement.
"The health department shall vac
cinate all school children who have
been, exposed to the d:sease. and
will require teachers and children
vaccinated or debarred from school,"
Dr. Pinto announced.
Influx of German Goods
Reduces Prices for Toys
German toys are again on the
Omaha market.
Most of them, racked for shipment
in 1919 and held up by the war block
ade, have just arrived.
' Toy trains, mechanical toys, silky-
liaircd dolls and stuffed animals, all
made in Germany, are being display
ed by Omaha stores as Christmas
approaches.
According to buyers of the differ
ent stores displaying the imported
toys, the influx of German toys has
greatly reduced toy prices.
