The ttirquoisp. today's talismanlO gem, was credited by the Persians with the power to bnnir good for tunc, resulting from the attainment of wealth, to tnose who saw the new moon reflected in its depths. How ever, the stone mut be one which was a wift to the wearer, not pur chased by him. . The diamond, today's natal stone, should also be a gift if its wearer is to enjoy good fortune in love affairs; to exert its power to the full, it should be set in gold and worn on the left arm. Today's color is light green, which is symbolic of joyousncsi and pleas ure. The ancient! believed that it brought happiness to those who pre ferred fleeting' pleasures to less keen and more lasting ones. (Copyright. 1921. Wheeler Syndicate, Inn.) REAL ESTATE SUBURBAN. Doaglas 62S. OEOHOE F. JONES, Realtor, Romance in Origin , Of .Superstitions By K. IRVINQ KING, - Touching ths Dead. In Mn. Bergen's "Current Super ititioni" ppe,n th following com. munication from Wutport, Maii.l "l have noticed at funerals of ths aged that when elderly ptop'c P"fJ by the cisket ther would touch the forehead of tha dead person. I confident that there was some super stition connected with the act be cause the same look was apparent on every face; bnt on being aked why this wi done they pretended it wa bidding an old comrade good bye, At last one told me that It w that they niitht not dream of tlia dead or see thein." It would be Interesting tv know how wide-spread this supcrtl:ion ii. It Is probably more general than moit people imagine. People whu "hold by such superstitions Rte apt to be extremely reticent about them when talking with "unbelievers" partly from a fear of ridicule and partly became of that feeling which i causes certain savage people to "llold hit fetish from the white man's gire apart;" a primitive instinct. The superstition in (uriiion is patently a survival of that moit an cient belief in the power of the touch. A good example of this is the cus tom of touching for the king's evil, alias scrofula, which was practiced by the English nionarrhs down to the time of Queen Ann. Some superior power residing in the mouarch was transmitted by the touch and ex pelled the demon of disease. And there was a custom in the British. Parliament of touching with the sceptre a bill which had the royal assent, a custom which ts, perhaps, still carried out. Homer tells us how, some 4,000 years ago, Agamem non "Touched the chiefs and Meeled their manly souls." Look over the long list of definitions in the diction ary of the word "touch" and see how nearly all of them have in them the idea of the exertion of a mental -or spiritual pdwer by the toucher over the touched. It is an idea of primitive man who appears lo have. conveived a sort of magnetic spiritual ' fluid flowing from the finger that touched. When we touch the dead, as in the superstitious practice men tioned, we exert the power of the "touch" over their disembodied spirits to keep them away from us. You do not let it be mental judgment, either; you ex press in no uncertain terms just what you think. , VI course, after you have been heard in the matter and your opin ion proves to be of no valu, yen cannot get to cover gracefully, you have to stand a lot of odium. But why so positive for or against a certain thing before you have all -It is so much easier to suspend ' judgment and line up in the right way in matters concerning the pub lic good rather than to fly off on a tangent and have to be put in your place rather hard by those who real ly have the) facts and can down your efforts.
