KINO. , The Bride's Bouquet. Everybody knowi the diatom of weddings when, at the Roiiifr away oi the bride, die throws her bouquet over the tair-railing ami there is a struggle among the maiden, gathered below to see who will catch it. The one who is miccossfu!, the super, stitioti is, will be the next one to be married cut of the company. It is one of those superstitious practices which are indulged in with a laugh and a half-belief, and "I wonder if there's anything in it." But away deep down in the heart of the partici pants is the real belief that there is "something in it" and the results are closely looked after, "just to see," The bride's bouquet superstition is merely an application of the primitive doctrine of contagious magic. The bouquet of the bride, coming fresh from the hands cf the newly married maiden, is charged by contagious magic with her own personality which is largely, under the circumstances, matrimonial with what Mr. Clodd would call the "mana," that is author ity, influence, magical or supernatural power. The Polynesians use the word "mana" to express just thii idea in their primitive magic and the word has been adopted into English as a handy one by writers on folk love. This contagion is communicat ed to the maiden who catches the bouquet and, of course, if she reacts at all to the infection, she is sooner married than her companions who have been thus exposed. This primi tive conception of contagion can be traced to many current superstitions, is as old as the cave man, or older, and is in full force among peoples in a primitive state. (Copyright, 1121. Youth, modesty and extreme charm are believed to envelop its wearer. This stone will be particularly po tent today for young girls, to whom it will bring admiration of those whom they most desire to captivate. For those whose birth anniversary ' this is, the Chinese symbol of good luck the jade possesses talismanic qualities. Health, wealth and hap piness are promised those whose na tal stone it is if they wear a bit of it always. The happiness which is promises comes not only from the acquirement of riches, but also from peace and content in the heart. According to Siamese legend, dark . red is today's fortunate color. It is the symbol of the success which comes with strength and courage. The white rose, emblem of sweet ness and modesty, is today's signifi cant flower. (Copyright, 1921, Whee;er Syndicate, Inc.)
