arts Is relieved by use of halls In the

At the first meeting of the sophomore
clasa this year Helen Eason was elected
president; Vida McMillan, vice president;
Dorothea Bullard, secretary-treasurer. By
a unanimous vote Miss Boyer was chosen
sponsor.
The Debating club waa established on
solid ground. The constitution governing
the club waa accepted. Several matters
of business were attended to, including
the election of permanenta officers. Th
officers are a'a follows: President, Rob
ert Slattery; vice president, Martin
House; secretary and treasurer, Raphael
Wilkinson; critic, Edna Conn; timekeep
er, Ruth Stanton, After the business
mooting the members discussed the sales
tax. one of the vital subjects In current
topics. It will .be the subject for de
bate at our next meeting.

The Doane faculty women's club enter
tained the teachers of the public schools,
former members of the club, and wives
of tho local trustees of the college Sat
urday afternoon at the horns of Mrs. J.
N. Bennett.
Elva Bloodgood, one of the vocal solo
ists, gave the program In the parlor at '
Gaylord hall, Sunday.
A good many of the college students
participated In and attended the carnival
given by tho Axis club of Crete, Tuesday
night.
O. F. S. sorority gave Its annual fall
party -Saturday, October 29.
C. E. Rice of Hayes Center, a former
student at Doane, addressed the students
at the yell meeting Thursday evening.
The girls' honor D'a which were earned
and awarded last spring hsva beea re
ceived and the girls are, for the first
time, wearing the Bweater D'a which they
have earned for themselves.
D. O. Alter, graduate atudent at Har
vard, and N. J. Anderson, principal of
the Wahoo High achool. are recommend
ed by the Doane college faculty aa can
didates for the Rhodes scholarship. They,
will compete with those from other col
leges In the state. .
The first of the Monday evening lec
tures In biology was given this week. A
good attendance of townspeople were
present. The subject for discussion next
week will be "The Leaf that F"eeds th
World." Illustrated. This will be an open
meeting. - These lectures are In connec
tion with the extension course that Prof.
C. O. Carlson of tha biology department
is giving this winter.
Midland College
In spite of the rain Tuesday, a large
number of the students turned out for
the semi-annual, all-college picnic. The
entire day waa given over to tho students
as open day. The hike was across tho
river, over the Bluffs and back again to
the college where the greater part of
refreshments were served on account of
the rain.
The formal Initiation of the pledges of
tho Kal society was held Immediately fol
lowing a banquet, at the homo of Dr. J.
F. Krueger.
The Wynn society formally Initiated
their pledges at th home of Miss Marian
Bader.
At a convention held In Wayne, Dean
Tllberg was elected president of the Lu
theran Brotherhood of Nebraska.
Tho Y. W. C. A. will hold their initia
tion of new members on November 3.
During th state teachers association
convention which will be held In Omaha,
the Midland and former Fremont college
teachers will be entertained at a banquet
at the Rome hotel. Arrangements have
been made to have as guests somo of tha
