week. An advance of 2c was made the
first of the week with the market still
stronger the last of the week. Dealers
are paying 38c to 40c per dozen for No.
1 eggs, and 25c to 2c for No. 2, for
eggs from the country. The supply of
fresh eggs coming Into the market Is
very- limited because this Is the moulting
period of the hens.
TOULTRY.
The Omaha poultry market has been
weaker all this week. A drop of 2c to
2c on springs and hens occurred
the first nf the week with the
market strengthening a little the last nf
tne week. Buyers are paying 15c to 17c
for springs and light hens and 16c to
19c for heavy hens. The supply of live
poultry has been quite liberal. Very tew
ducks and geese are coming In at pres
ent: a few small shipments of dressed
poultry from out In the state has been
coming In to the market since the weather
has cooled down.
HAY.
There has been quite a liberal run on
the hay market here this week. A total
of 7S cars arrived at the exchange this
week. 31 cars of alfalfa and 44 cars of
prairie hay. The demand has not been
very good but prices are maintained fairly
well. The quality of the hay Is medium
to good.

New York, Oct. 16. We are now
very nearly at the time of year when
the character of the financial situ
ation gets its real test, along with
the reaching of its normal maximum
of activity by the autumn trade. A
year ago this test disclosed an ex
trcme stringency of credit, a highly
precarious condition in speculative
finance and industry, and, as a con
sequence, a prolonged and violent
decline of prices, both in the great
commodity markets and on the stocK
exchange.

of us now is a thoroughly readjust
ed speculative situation, a Jederai
reserve position which is as excep
tionally strong as it was exception
ally weak a year ago, a compara

gradal revival of trade activity. No.

months since the "index numbers

Advance Slow.
But the advance Is very slow; so is the
resumption of trade activity and the un
certain movement of the stock exchange,
since Its first reflection of the Improved
conditions by the vigorous recovery of
September, Indicates the uncertainties
which still prevail. The markets are learn

New York, Oct. 15. Cotton goods wers
quiet, with prices fairly steady In the
gray goods division. Lines of fine dress
goods for spring offered during the day
show slightly changed price. Knit under
wear was quiet, with large advance sales
of athletic underwear. An official state
ment of the burlap shipments from Csl
cutta to the United States In September
showed a volume of 86.900.600 yards, or
2.000.000 yards In excess of early reports.
Burlap markets were easier.
