The subject of farm loans has ot
late tajken on immense importance.
"The Federal Farm Loan System
in Operation," "by A. C. Wiprud,
connected with this government in
stitution at St. Paul, is timely and
authoritative. This system, which
at first was vigorously fought by
bankers and loan agents, has more
than vindicated itself, equalizing farm
rates, kept interest down at least 1
per cent, and has been of immense
service to agriculture and industry
as well. The volume of farm mort-
fage loans in the United Slates is
4,000,000,000, and the importance of
lower interest rates is great. Halt

full of information that any adult
can enjoy it is "Egypt and the Holy
Land, one ot a series published by
Macmillan under the general title,
"Peeps at "Many Lands." It is an
American edition of a celebrated
English series. This one, which
combines child life and the phases of
foreign existence that appeal to
youthful interest, contains 16 illus
trations in color, many of them by
famous artists.
A single tear trickled down her
cheek and fell to the floor of the ho-'

He saw it and couldn't forget.
Weeks later he saw her again.
She had just turned to leave the
entrance way to a brilliant ball room.
A single tear trickled down her
cheek.
"So sorry I'm late," said he loud
enough for those near to hear, and
he took her arm gently and led her
back into the dance.
This is the way Ritt Bourne met
Alloway, and they were married
straightway on the promise that Jie
never would make an attempt to
fathom the mystery of her life be
fore they met.
The rest of the story is a pretty
little fantasy, "Cobweb," a new
book by George Agnew Chamber

Ritt Bourne is a likable fellow.

of his dreams" he premises anything
to win her. His resulting suffering,
intense as Mr. Chamberlain reveals
to us, cannot be equal to that of
"Miss Alloway," whose charming
personality and sweet imagination
simply enthralls us.
Of course, "Cobweb" is improb
able. But it is a most refreshing lit
tle romance in this day of morbid
problem plays, novels and scenarios.
Mr. Chamberlain's style is smooth
and readable, and "Cobweb" fairly
throbs with dramatic interest.
"The Crystal Heart," by Phyllis
Bottome, is the tale of the child joy
and the sweet woman joy of the
crystal heart, to whom all is simple,
pellucid truth, undeviating honor,
unquestioning goodness.
Yet those who know Miss
Bottome's strong, sometimes stark
ly, sadly strong, work know that this
can be no novel of curls and sweet
ness, pink roses, terraces and tea.
There is salt, tangy wisdom of life
from the very first scenes in Joy s
numerous and peculiar family, and
there is no flinching from the truths
which the realities of the author's
characters create. Indeed, the reader
may violently disagree with the
author as to the end, which makes
r.o compromise with any conven
tions, whether of fiction of life.
Pictures of interesting, strongly-
marked people impose themselves
upon the reader. Nicholas, the bov
lover and his little comrade Avith
flying hair galloping across snn
flooded spaces: little Rosemary, the
sister to whom Toy srives some years
of her life with passionate devotion;
madly plucky Julia, who fights her
slimy dragon point device with all
the trappings of chivalrous courage;
the egregious Owen; Mrs. Feather-

all these, and the lesser characters
with them, are of a quality to com
mand respect for their creator. Pub
