Increased Number of Fullures.
Considering the extent of tho tuslnen
readjustment. It Is not surprising that In
solvency statistics still disclose a com
mercial mortality much above the aver
age. After a Mzable reduction during
the second quarter, failures in the third
quarle of this year Increased 7.4 per cent
In number, and reached the highest
point for the period since 1915. Tho
exhibit as to liabilities, on the other hand,
shows a continued trend toward Improve
ment, despite the larger number of de
faults. From about $130,000,000 in the
fiecond quarter, the Indebtedness for the
third quiirter fell to $122,700,000, and au
average of $27,437 for each failure com
pares with one of $31,293 in the second
quarter. In tho first quarter, this year,
tho average was slightly above $37,000,
while In tho third quarter of last year It
was $39,3u0. If figures of aggregate
Indebtedness alone are taken, however,
tho record shows that In no previous
third quartetr has so largo an amount
been involved as in the present instance.
Dry (toods Active.
The change to cooler weather this
week, following recent unseasonable tem
peratures, gave soma impetus to retp.il
dry goods distribution, and Jobbers are
fairly busy. Demand from retailers is
steady, but consists more of as frequent
repeating of moderate-sized, orders than
of large individual commitments. Al
though cottons are still being offered at
comparatively low prices In consuming
channels, the trend in primary murkets
Is upward, and raw silk reflects the re
ports of a partial destruction of the au
tumn silk crop in Japan, and higher
Jute prices have likewise resulted from
estimates of a reduced yleltti While tex
tile production is still mors or less re
stricted and foreign trade has continued
quiet, the opinion prevails that the worst
of the yoar'a depression has been seen.
Leather Situation Improves.
Despite irregularities, both In business
and prices, the hide and leather situation
continues to improve. Quietness in for
eign hides has been largely due to ad
verse exchange conditions, but domestic
stock Is moving more freely and the mar
ket undertone is firmer. While individual
sales of magnitude are lacking, there is
a general demand, with various interests
operating. In 'leather, notwithstanding les
sened activity in upper descriptions, tran
sactions have been on tho broadest scale
of the year, and it is estimated that sole
leather tanneries aro running at about
55 per cent of capacity. Tanners of au
tomoblle leather, moreover, are doing
much better than early in tho year, and
considerable improvement is noted among
patent leather tanners in the east. The
shoe trade, meantime. Is passing through
a between-seasons period and a lull pre
vails at many centers, although prospects
for an Increase . In business during the
next fetv months are considered favorable.
