Mr. Dickson of the Dickson & Bristol Co., knew that he was pre suming on the good nature of his best salesman when he asked the question. The lots in the Armour sub-division were selling rapidly and he wanted to dispose of them all be fore the end of the week. "Not if you need me." replied Jack Warring, "What is it, Mr. Dick son?" "Young couple, engaged, want a home. Take the car and go in for them about 7:30. "Who are they?" "Elmer Burkett is the chap. 6435 North Park. He acts like he means business. Show him lot 16 with the shade trees along the front. Nice bungalow, all ready for occupancy.' Jack groaned. He knew what that meant. Kurkett was engaged to Ce cily Durand. Once Jack had thought the house on lot 16 would be his own and hers. He sighed and jumped into the automobile. An hour later he opened the rear door to assist Cecily from the car. Elmer, however, had no intention of permitting Jack to render any serv ice to Cecily. He sprang from the car and offered his hand to the slen der girl in white. . Jack led the way and the couple followed, Cecily commenting every step on the beauty of the new divi sion. Elmer answered her sharply, seemingly disagreeing with her as to the merits of the place. "Is that the house. Jack?" she cried, pointing to the attractive little bungalow. "It iust seems made to order. Look, Elmer, isn't it a dar- lintr?" "I rlnn't- sp niiir.h to rave ationt. Hot out here, isn't it?" i 'Coolest place in town. said Tack. "Why, man. you get the lake brr-ze from here. "Oh. sure, it's ' your business to boost the division, of course. How much do you ask for that one?" "S"ren thousand. - " "That's what you ask. Now set down to brass tacks. What do you expect to get? Seven thousand. "Not front me. It isn't worth it.' Elmer's voice was unpleasant. "What would you consider pay inn?". I don't know. I want something within reason. You II never get that price for this place, and you know it." f "We're getting it for other houses out here. I can name six or seven other agencies, that would ask $5,000 more. ' It's a bargain," Elmer1 turned on him - rudely. "Don't hand me any' of that talk, I'm, not a 2-year-old. I know what a thing is worth. "It is worth $7,000," insisted Ce cily, as she entered 'the front door and Ut her eyes, wander over the log fireplace with', the bookcases on either side. , "And the sun porch. Isn t it complete? "What are you doing?" demanded Elmer roughly. ' "Trying to get Warring to raise. his price? "I don't do busiriess that way," said Jack quietly. "I'm making you a better offer than I would make to anyone else, because I think Cecily's being out here would bring others. Elmer flushed. "Just stop think ing about Cecily and talk real estate What will you sell this little chicken coop tor?' "Now, Burkett, don't get hasty. What will you pay? "It's up to you to talk figures. 1 will not pay more than $5,000." "Five thousand," mused Jack. "All right, I'll talk to you at that hgure.; Want .to close the deal now," ' ,..'. :-- Cecily looked from one to the other and held her breath. She knew property could not be pur chased here at that price. "Say, you must be joking. Think I'd part with 5,000 iron men for a miserable, squeezed little thing like that so-called house?" k- "Burkett, you don't mean to buy at all. I knew-that when I went in for you. I wouldn't sell that house for $5,000. If Cecily isn't worth $7,000 to you she isn't worth any thing. If you were a poor man I d not talk this way. but before you are married you begin watching the pennies. I'm a comparatively poor man compared to you. but if I mar ried Cecily I'd. work day and night to buy that house for her. ihc be longs there. Can't you see, Elmer. her heart is set on it? She can set her heart on some other house. I ' wouldn't ' buy from you at any price. "Then what are you after, a free ride?" . "No. I've a car of my own. I wanted to see if Cecily had the nerve to face you. I thought pei haps she'd shy off at coming out here with ycu. She would have hesitafed, " too, if she'd cared any thing about you now. I've got my money's worth. Take us back to town." - "Elmer!" Cecily's eyes were filled with tears. . . " "Come on. I haven't any time to waste." "I'm not going back to town," said Jack. "You'll have to go on the street car. This automobile is used for the purpose of conveying from town persons who are actually interested in hCBSCJ is this division," Drawn for The Bee by McManu rHvHkt l:i nternt.i Mm tWrvt "lie's right," said Cecily. "I'm gtad he won't take you." "He's refusing to take you home, Cecily. That's the kind of a nun you just missed marrying." "No, I'm not refusing to take Ce cily, but you can't ride in that car." "I don't want to. Come on," Elmer said to the girl. She hesitated, then she said tremu lously, "I think I'll ride in with Jack." Slowly she drew a ring from her finger and offered it to Elmer. He took if after a time and strode away muttering under his breath. Some time later Jack drove up to the small lranie building where Mr. Dickson sat waiting. "Did you sell the house, Jack?" "Yes, sir." "Good boy. So Burkett liked it?" "No, he didn't, but Miss Durand docs." "How do you do, Miss Durand. Nice house, isn't it? Hope you'll be mighty happy there." "Do you want to close the deal now?" asked Jack of Mr. Dickson. " "If Miss Durand is ready." "I I can't "she faltered. "I'm buying the house, Mr. Dick son. It's going to be our home. Congratulate me." Mr. Dickson runk his hand warm ly. "You're going to have the finest house that $10,000 can buy," he told Cecily. Ten thousand. But Jack sai seven ' "I'd heard that Burkett wouldn't go over that price and I quoted it low because I wanted you to live there. .Why, Cecily, I watched every inch of work that went into that place. I always expected you to 1 live in it. Somehow I wanted it to be your house even if it was Burkett's too." "Going for $7,000," said Mr. Dick son and promptly walked outside.
