state, the crop is especially prom

Professor Filley, and the corn pro
duction there will be materially af
fected. Corn in a few other coun
ties will suffer from too rapid ma
turity.

derson, federal crop statistician for
Nebraska on the condition of the Ne
braska corn crop, reads as follows
High winds and temperatures have
matured corn very rapidly, Varticu
larly in the south Platte territory
west of Lancaster and Gage coun
ties. Part of the corn is well dented
and the husks dry.

the drouth sections and the average
yield of Kearney, Franklin, Harlan
Phelps and Buffalo counties will be
cut 50 per cent.

Cleveland, Aug. 29. Strike ballots
on the acceptance or rejection of the
recent $400,(KX),000 wage reduction
ordered by the railroad labor board
were mailed last night to the 409.0UO
members of the Big Four brother
hoods and the Switcht.icu's Union of
North America. '
The ballots revealed a difference
of opinion among the chief execu
tives of the organizations, the Broth
erhood of Locomotive Engineers,
Brotherhood ot Locomotive Fire
men and Engincmcn, Order of Rail
way Conductors, and the switchmen
using a joint ballot, while the
Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen
sent out a separate ballot.
The trainmen's ballot stated that
it had been the intention of all or
ganizations to use a joint ballot, but
that this was impossible because the
ballot adopted bv the other organi
zations "did not, ,.t our opinion, con
tain an impartial and unbiased re
cital of all involved, nor did it con
vey the assurance that the wishes of
the men, if against working for re
duced wages, would determine the
question, and that they would be
permitted to leave the service."
Permission to Withdraw.
The joint ballot declared that if
the membership vote was to reject
the wage reductions which became
effective July 1, "it is to be under
stood that the men will be permitted
to withdraw from the service un
less satisfactory settlement can be
reached under the laws of the organi
zation." "The proposition which confronts
our members and others," said the
trainmen's ballot,, "carries with it an
attempt to reverse the decision of the
railroad labor board on the wage re
duction now in effect since July 1, or
else persuade or cpmpel railroad
companies to reiustitute w?ge rates
that the labor board decided should
be reduced.
Must Abide by Vote.
"All members and others are
hereby notified that if the member-
ship vote is in majority to leave the
service they will, on any or all lines
where such vote is secured,, (with the
sanction of the geheral grievance
committee) be given necessary au
thority by the president of the grand
lodge. The president of the grand
lodge will not undertake to prevent
the wishes of the men, as expressed
in their ballot, from being ad
hered to." ,
. The number of active members of
the organizations to whom ballots
were mailed was estimated at 150,000
trainmen, 115,000 firemen. 80.000 en
gineers, 50,000 conductors and 14,000
switchmen. In addition , the wage
reduction had been previously voted
on by the six shop crafts under the
railway employes' department of the
American Federation of Labor. The
result has been understood to be
largely against the acceptance of the
reductions.

Confer at Mansion House

sociated Press.) The members oi
the Irish republican cabinet gathered
at the Mansion House here this
morning, coining directly from the
country where they spent the week
end but, according to an official re
port, no formal meeting was held.
It was stated that nothing could
be expected regarding the reply of
the cabinet to Premier Lloyd
George's latest communication until
Tuesday at the earliest and probably
until Wednesday.

Man Convicted of Murder
Of Salesman at Flagstaff '
Flagstaff, Ariz., Aug. 29. Harry
H. Nash of Hillsdale, Wyo., was
found guilty of second degree mur
der for the slaying of Martin F.
Schwab, Payson, (Utah), traveling
salesman, near here, April 15, 1920,
by a jury in superior court here to
day. The jury deliberated 37 hours
before reaching a verdict. Nash
claimed self-defense. Second degree
murder is punishable in this state
by imprisonment from 10 years to
life. Sentence will be pronounced
by Judge J. E. Jones in superior
court not later than Tuesday, the
court announced. - .
