Strike Ballots Mailed to Rail Union Members Split in Rauks Cau?cs, Two Forms of Ballots Workers Demand That Vote Set tle Walkout Question. Cleveland, Aug. 29. Strike ballots on the acceptance or rejection of the recent $400,(KX),000 wage reduction ordered by the railroad labor board were mailed last night to the 409.0UO members of the Big Four brother hoods and the Switcht.icu's Union of North America. ' The ballots revealed a difference of opinion among the chief execu tives of the organizations, the Broth erhood of Locomotive Engineers, Brotherhood ot Locomotive Fire men and Engincmcn, Order of Rail way Conductors, and the switchmen using a joint ballot, while the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen sent out a separate ballot. The trainmen's ballot stated that it had been the intention of all or ganizations to use a joint ballot, but that this was impossible because the ballot adopted bv the other organi zations "did not, ,.t our opinion, con tain an impartial and unbiased re cital of all involved, nor did it con vey the assurance that the wishes of the men, if against working for re duced wages, would determine the question, and that they would be permitted to leave the service." Permission to Withdraw. The joint ballot declared that if the membership vote was to reject the wage reductions which became effective July 1, "it is to be under stood that the men will be permitted to withdraw from the service un less satisfactory settlement can be reached under the laws of the organi zation." "The proposition which confronts our members and others," said the trainmen's ballot,, "carries with it an attempt to reverse the decision of the railroad labor board on the wage re duction now in effect since July 1, or else persuade or cpmpel railroad companies to reiustitute w?ge rates that the labor board decided should be reduced. Must Abide by Vote. "All members and others are hereby notified that if the member- ship vote is in majority to leave the service they will, on any or all lines where such vote is secured,, (with the sanction of the geheral grievance committee) be given necessary au thority by the president of the grand lodge. The president of the grand lodge will not undertake to prevent the wishes of the men, as expressed in their ballot, from being ad hered to." , . The number of active members of the organizations to whom ballots were mailed was estimated at 150,000 trainmen, 115,000 firemen. 80.000 en gineers, 50,000 conductors and 14,000 switchmen. In addition , the wage reduction had been previously voted on by the six shop crafts under the railway employes' department of the American Federation of Labor. The result has been understood to be largely against the acceptance of the reductions. Members of Irish Cabinet Confer at Mansion House Dublin, Aug. 29. (By The As sociated Press.) It occurs mostly in the ear. irr fields. Planted during May. Jn some localities there was Joo much dry weather following planting; some growers say that too large a art of the good seed wis sold and binned out. and others say that a good many growers spoiled their red bv ciittuin it and allowing. :t to stand too long before planting. But a noor stand will not mean a correspondingly poor yield, beca'iie the isolated plants, having the ad- antage of more moisture, will grow more potatoes than those closer to gether. The early acreage ot the dry-land erritory is in the Rushville-Gordou istrict. wlici the principal variety . s F.arly Chios, planted before tlje iddle of May. 1 he crop in many f these fields is fully matured and there was some digging as early as August la. Ihe fields seem to have had plenty of moisture after the plants were up, as the amount ot second growth, is comparatively small and a large number of the tubers show growth cracks, which sually result from hot weather and moist soil. Scab is common in these e'arlv fields. Iii the Alliancc-Hem- ingford district there will be little ggtng until the third week :n Sep tember. The few early fields show . considerable second growth as the result of rains lata in their, growing season following a dry period, but ttle damage from growth cracks, lot weather v has caused growth cracks in much of the early stock emg shipped from the scottsblun- Morrill irrigated district. .Early Ohios. Adding 608 cars, shipped from central Ne braska, the- total for the state waa 680. Shipments for the state all last season totaled 2,988 cars. Much o! this early movement rom the west ern counties was immature stock, bought or shipped for the high market which prevailed duuring the first - three weeks of August. .
