Him to Hold Up Another
"Hootch" was the cause, E. W.
Sterling of Des Moines asserts, for
his attempt, to hold up J. E. Welch,
night telegraph operator, near the
Burlington station Thursday night.
He claims not to remember, the in
cident, his weeping and accepting
a "feed" from Welch thereafter. He
was dismissed when Welch refused
to prosecute.

When A. J. Cassatt, as president
cf the Pennsylvania Railroad com
pany, directed that the terminal of
the tunnels under the Hudson which
were tc connect Jersey City with
Manhattan should be established on
the Manhattan side at the foot of
Thirty-fourth and Thirty-third
streets, his plan was criticised se
verely. In fact many were the crit
icisms, some of them made by able
business men, of the whole propo
sition which involved the building of
two tunnels under the Hudson, elec
trifying them and the continuation
of these tunnels under New York
city to the Hast river thence under
that river to a great terminal in
Long Island. Chief among the crit
icisms was the statement that the
many millions which were involved
in this vast undertaking would be
almost lost since the earnings could
not be sufficient to meet even the
interest upon the cost.
President Cassatt was not dismayed not
could he be prevailed upon to abandon hm
plan. Ilia forecast took In a greater vision
than that of any of his critics. Ho was
confident that In addition to tho advan
tages to be obtained from a New Yor

the Harlem and the New Haven ap
paorches of New York City and by the
Investment of many millions in real es
tate stretching northerly for a half mile
from the station.
Forecast Fulfilled. .
Already the Pennslyvania section which
Is about a mile distant from the Grand
Central terminal section is responding to
the forecast which was made by President
Cassatt. A large bank Is to bo opened
for budness operative under state charter
in that section in a short time. An da
national bank with a capital of '.000,0OO
and a paid In surplus of $600,000 Is to be
established nearby early in the fall.
The Pennsylvania caused to be erecteit
directly opposite its terminal, the largest
hotel in the world. It is conducted In such
manner as to mako it comparable- wi n
the most fashionable of American hotels.

From Window, Unhurt;
Fate played one of its strange
tricks yesterday when "Billy" Kin
youn, 3, son of Dr. Floyd Kinyoun,
1504 Yates street,- plunged 18 feet
from a window and escaped without
injury.
While Mrs. Kinyoun was worktiiQ
in the kitchen of her home, Billv
ascended the stairs and walked near
a window. He climbed to the win
dow sill and losing his balance fcl:

The mother frantically ran to the
child who was unconscious for a lew
minutes from the shock. An exam-'
ination by Dr. Kinyoun showed thai

was not hurt.
