10 THE BEE: OMAHA, SATURDAY, AUGUST 27, 1921. Holding a Husband Adele Garrison's New. Phase o! Revelations of a Wife Why His First Glimpse of Grace Draper Startled Dick. I awoke the next morning with the sense of some unpleasant duty impending' which I could not tinit define. , Then, as I gathered my scattered faculties together, I knew what it was that awaited mo. It was the day of Grace Draper's ar rival. There must be no delay in meeting her at the Shelter Island ferry, for she is too striking a figure to re main unremarked if she were kept waiting. There also must be no hint of our errand to Dicky's moth j er. I could imagine the scene she i Would stage if sie received any ink . ling that Grace Draper was to be ' brought hack into Dicky's life agam. T I woke Dicky with difficulty, laughingly clapping my hand over his mouth with a warning gesture rfs he showed signs of cxposnlating loudly. ; "Do vou want your mother H hoar?" I whispered, and his manner changed in a second as he docilely t climhed out of bed. " 'v"'1fow are you going to square mother about this trip?" he asked, iwhen we went downstairs to our ; sitting room, w here there were al f rcady signs of one of Mrs. Ticcr's 'delicious breakfasts, j "I think I'll leave that to you," T .said demurely, as I walked to the ; door to summon Mrs. Tieer. not dar-"- ing to use the little bell wlr'ch she ;had provided for our use. I knew ; that the tinkle of that bell w-mld be , like a fire signal to a well-trained tirs horse in the days before motors .superseded the faithful animnls, "Not on your golden weddiua dav?!" Dicky registered livelv alarm. "I'll face a maddened tigress in any jungle you name, but' explaining this errand to my lady mother nay, nay gentle wife. Trithee " Mrs. Ticer's entrance with our grapefruit rut short his extravagant nonsense, beneath which, however. I knew there was' more' than a little truth. Dicky depends as much upon me to rescue him from his mother's captious criticism as if she were t relative upon my side of the house instead of his. What's What By HELEN DECIE Some correspondents are in per plexity regarding the proper way to address a professional woman who is married. Should she be entitled Mrs. James Harlow, or Mrs. Susan Harlow? It should be said that, with the exception of doctors, pro fessional women themselves are not in uniform agreement on this sub ject. Who, outside of a few inti mate friends, knows the "Mr. and Mrs. name" of Louise Homer, or Margaret Leland, or May Wilson Preston, to name but a few famous artists who are not spinsters? Sonic Englishwomen, for example. Mrs. Humphry Ward keep the name of the "mister," even in their profes sional work, while others, like Alice Meynell, retain their own first names. The rule most generally observed Is to use the husband's name, pre fixed by "Mrs.," for all social mat ters, including correspondence; thus i letters should be addressed to Mrs. Lorin Deland. Mrs. Wilfrid Meynell, .Mrs. James Preston, etc., instead of : using the names by which these women are best known in their re spective professions. Copyrlsht. U;i. by Tublic Ledger Co. "You're Missing Your Vocation." "You arc early," Mrs. Ticer said, smiling. I explained to her in a low voice that my husband had received a summons from an art editor friend of his staying at Quogue to a con ference over some illustrations, and that I was to-drive him over. "He just received the message last night when we drove to the village," I went on. "And we do not wish to have Mother Graham awaken until after we're gone." "So if you have any chloroform or ether handy, and can sprinkle or blow a little of it around her room. I'll be your debtor forever," Dicky interrupted. "I'll sec w hat I can do." she prom ised, with the demure, dignified yet most effective manner in which she always joins any raillery to which she is invited. I "never have known a woman of her educational limita tions as finely poised. "Don't spare expense!" Dicky called siJtly after her as she left the room, then he struck an admiring at titude, and looked at nic quizzically, "When you tell one you make it a whopper, don't you?" he commented, with a si grin. "It wasn't!" I declared indignantly. "You have received a sumnu ns from a frirnd. It involves, or will shortly involve, a conference over some il lustrations. I am to drive you jjver, and we don't want your mother to waken until we're gone. The only things that weren't prefectly, truth ful," I st.imniered, "were the 'words 'art editor' and 'Quogue.' " He started at me fixedly for a second a gaze that held in it some thing which made me uncomfortable then threw up his hands with a gesture of utter surrender. "So that's the way yoi figure it out. is it?" he said. "Commend me to a Puritan conscience for being able to. whip his unmentionable majesty around the biggest stump to be found. 1 say. old dear, you re missing your vocation. You'd be worth a billion or two to some of those war profiteers who are trying to explain how they keep their prices up." 1 flushed hotly with angry chagrin. This was the sort of thanks I re reived, I told -myself pettishly, when 1 tried to "square things" for Dicky. F,ut I forced myself to smile as I an swered him. "Why Didn't You Tell Me?" "The next time you'll tell your own fibs." I said lightly. Then I hurried him and myself through a breakfast which deserved ample leasure. and was successful in getting away from the farmhouse : before Mother Graham's appearance. The drive through Sag Harbor. North Haven and beautiful wooded Shelter Island was a delightful one. We reached the Greenport ferry in ample time, and waited with ferevish impatience for the arrival of the ferryboat. I watced Dicky furtively but keenly, wondering what would be his emotion when he first caught sight of the girl. I was the first to sight her tall, still lissome figure, coming across the gangplank, and I quietly called Dicky's attention to her. He stared at her, frankly taking advantage of her absorption in her luggage, then he turned to me in dis may. "For the love of Mike, girl, why didn't you tell me she'd gone off in her looks, like that?" he demanded. "I can't use her for those illustrations the way she looks now." (Continued Tomorrow.) By CORINNE LOWE. New York. (Special Correspond ence.) When Gilbert and Sullivan celebrated the "greencry-yallcry" young man they couldn't foretell the same kind of a young woman of the summer of 1921. She deserves a song all to herself, for in her clothes both of these estlietic tints, either alone or combined, have romped all over the resorts. . Our present model adds to a front panel of green organdy an overskirt, bodice, and sleeves of yellow in the same material. This, overskirt is trimmed with tiny ruffles of green, and bands of yellow on the corsage come under the same jurisdiction. The lower sleeves are green or gandy, and a sash of blace: satin slipped under the side sections of the bodice gives the final accent. To this costume is added a charm ing hat of plaited yellow organdy topped by a crown made solidly of yellow flowers and green leaves. Large roses of green organdy on the brim introduce a bit of rival horticulture. An investment that pays bit dividendsBee want ads. Waldorf Salad. Theie are many rooks who make Waldorf salad.
