What Grace Draper Wrote to
Madge.
I opened Grace Draper's answer
to my letter with hands that 1 kept
from shaking only by putting fortli ,
all my will power. Had she accept
ed or refused the offer I had marts
her on Dicky's account? And whal
would be my own reaction to tithci
decision on her part? At the mo
ment so coniliclinu were the emo
tions which swept me that 1 had no
answer for my own last query.
Dicky strolled up behind me laz
ily and looked over my shoulder as
I read. J lis pose ot inuoicm, cas
ual interest was too perfect, too
studied a thing to deceive me. I
knew that his nerves were as tense
as mine ever this communication.
It opened abruptly, with no date
line or salutation, even as had the
other letter, the plea for pardon,
which she had sent to me when I
was in the south. I wondered anew
the reason for this, whether under
neath her proffered repentance there
was not a bitterness which would
not let her prefix even the conven
tional "dear" to a letter, althounh
considering the abasement and re
morse which her letter and de
meanor had shown, my theory ap
peared most fantastic.
"I have just received your kindly
letter through the usual channel,"
the page began, and 1 noticed the
caution which avoided any mention
of Linda Shellford's name, "and
you can never know how much jo.y
and relief it brought me. The
knowledge that you have really for
given me, as you must have before
taking me into your life again, is as
wonderful to me as the prospect of
once more getting to work at some
thing outside the routine of the last
year. It will be like being trans
trrrcn from hell to heaven. And I
tinnt vnn so much for the money
you so thoughtfully enclosed for my
fare. It was too generous, ui j
cannot know how sorely I needed it
I have enough left to pay my fare
to the place you mention, but only a
trifle more, so you can imagine how
wonderful to me is the prospect oi
remunerative work.
"Trunks Are Embarrassing.
"1 will meet you at the place you
name, on aaiuroay mumm..
first trai nthat reaches there. I have
never visited that section, winch, is
an advantage at present. I am
bringing only what effects I can put
into a suitcase ana Dag. irunhs
embarrassing things." .
The letter closed wun mat sen
tence, abruptly, and I looked for the
signature in vain. Dicky reached
over my shoulder for the letter and
studied it caremiiy. n
' You ve got to sup " to uvi,
said at last. "She don't name no
names, does Gracie, ana sncs nui
this posted a dozen miles from
Hempstead. I tell you the kid s
clever. Poor devil. AVell, we'd better
call up and reserve a room w
at that hotel! ...
"By the way, old dear, this thing is
going to run into money. Did you
notice how delicately she intimated
that she is strapped? However, I can
afford to throw away a litt.e casn
on this deal it means so much to
me. But if little Gracie imagines
she's going to have a meal ticket
for any considerable length of time
she has another guess ' coniing.
Someway I feel sort, of queer about
her coming back this wav I hope
we won't regret it."
Makinz Arrangements.
Curiously enough his words and
own premonition of evil connected
with Grace Draper's . return to our
life, lessened it materially. I real zed
that my greatest fear of Grace
Draper was a sub-conscious fear
connected with the influence : she
formerly had wteiaen over
