180 University Teachers
Will Not Get Salaries
Raised.
Lincoln, Aug. 18. (Special.)
University regents planned to in
crease salaries of 180 of the univer
sity teachers $77,680 this year, ac
cording to figures obtained from the
office of the university treasurer.
This represents an average increase
of $431 a year for each of the 180
teachers who were scheduled for a
raise in salary, and, who, according
to the regents, cannot realize tfte in
crease if the courts uphold the law
passed by the last legislature author

propnaions as a reserve fund to
guard against deficiency appropria

At the present time the 180 teach
ers, combined, draw a salary of
$472,880 a year. Under the new
schedule of salaries which the regents
planned to put into effect September
1. 19JI, the combined salaries of the
180 teachers would have been
$550,560 a year.
The average salary of the 180
teachers under the 'present rate is
$2,627 a school ear. Utider the
proposed, rate to take effect Septem
ber 1. it would have been $3,058 a
school year of nine months, or $340
a month taking nine as the clivjsor
and $240 a month, taking 12 as the
divisor.
Under the proposed schedule, ef
fective September 1, 88 of the in
structors would receive less than
$3,000 a school year ,and the salaries
of the remainder range from $3,000
to $5,500 a year.
This does not include the entire
teaching staff of the university, but
just those who were due for an in
crease in salaries. The salaries of
the chancellor and a majority of the
deans are not included in the list.

(Special.) The co-operative efforts
of Grand Island retail merchants
and other interests to put on a
"Buyers carnival," in other words,
a community sale, has gone beyond
all of the exoectatious of the par
ticipants, many of whom sold out
their stocks on hand at the prices
offered before the end of the. first
day. Such merchants are either re
placing their stocks from local
wholesale houses or are taking or
ders from the consumers and will
deliver the specific articles on which
they offered bargains later at the
same price. The mercantile interests
of the city have never undertaken
anything as successful from both
the standpoint of the merchant and
of the consuming public, and it is
freely predicted that such a sale as
this will be held at least once a
year.

Messmorc, after an agreement had

Washington. Aug. 18. (Special
Telegram.) That financial disaster
to thousands of farmers would surely
follow a failure by the Interstate
Commerce commission to revise rail
road rates downward was predicted
by II. D Lute of Lincoln, represent
ing the Nebraska State Farm federa
tion, when called to the witness
stand today in the rate hearings af
fecting grain and hay shipment
from the western states

Mr. Lute in testifying presented

ically. He said there were thousands
of tons of the crop of last year still
rotting in stalk, and that from pres
ent outlook much of the present crop
would not be cut at all.

practically 50 per cent of the 1920
crop still on his hands, and with a very
large- corn crop in view for the pres
ent ycar, the farmer was far from
happy over the prospects unless re
lief in railroad rates is granted. Mr.
Lute said that the crop is not moving
now, but that shippers and producers
advise him that if there could be a
moderate concession such as remov
ing the last 35 per cent increase in
railroad rates by the Interstate Com
merce commission last year there was
little doubt the croo would move.
In reply to questions, (Mr. Lute
told the commission that wiless they
gave some relief there would be a
great reduction in the crop area and
large areas would revent to range con

Grand Island Mayor
' Will Manage Store
Grand Island, Neb., Aug. 18.
(Special.) Mayor T. J. Ellsberry
has resigned his position as yard
master for the L'nion Pacific Rail
road company, after 35 years of
service and will devote all of his
time to Grand Island', co-operative
store, which has been doing busi
ness for several years under the
name of "Our Store.1' The change
is being made mainly in order that
Mr. Ellsberry can be in closer touch
with city affairs.
Mr. Ellsberry's campaign for
mayor was marked with an incident
of unusual nature, when it was an
nounced that he had been advised
by the Union Pacific that he would
either be obliged to give up his can
didacy or his position. This an
nouncement, if officially authorized
at the time, was later withdrawn.
The mayor's action at present, how
ever, is entirely upon his own vo
lition. Des Moines May Get
Rotary Convention

Platte County Changes
Date of Teachers' Meeting
