Mrs. Lavarra insisted that Grfgor took her chickens and Mrs. Gregor was equally insistent that Gregor did not take any of the Lavarra poultry. The court settled the dispute by ordering the women to return to their homes and permitting Mrs. Lavarra to pick from the Gregor llock sucii chickens as she believes belong to the Lavarra flock. "She might take them all, sug gested Mrs. Gregor. When we think of steam we usual ly visualize it as a cloud of vapor, very much like a thick fog, and it is naturally hard to see how this in tangible airy substance can generate power sufficient to drive locomotives, move wheels of huge factories or en able ships tod plow through the water. But we must remember that, in the case of a steam engine, the steam is not floating loosely in the air but is tightly enclosed, and the resultant power is therefore similar in effect to that of gunpowder. A charge of the latter, lighted in a pile in the open air, will burn with no noise and will generate but little en ergy while if it is encased in a cart ridge and exploded by the action of a gun hammer, it will give off a loud report and hurl a bullet a mile or more with deadily accuracy. The steam or the water vapor is also formed under high pressure and, in seeking an outlet, expands and gives rise to the power that does the real work of the engine itself. This power is due to the tiny molecules of water of which the steam is formed, each of which strives to get loose from the walls of the cylinder which imprisons it and so moves the piston forward just as steam would break the strongest of boilers if sufficient heat were applied without a safety valve to permit the escape of the heated vapor. The power of each of the molecules of water is, of itself, almost negligible, but, when multi plied by millions and billions, be comes practically irrcsistable and can be harnessed to perform a multitude of useful functions. The Updike Grain Company "The Reliable Consignment House' In Banks, Yet Financiers Note Signs of Coming Era of Prosperity. By HOLLAND. Again many of the banks, ev prciallv in New England and also in New York, will have visible proof of (he disastrous effect occasioned by the passing of dividends or the postponement of the payment of them. This time this evidence will be furnished through the action of the American Suga Refining com pany in passing its regular dividend upon the common stock. Millions have been invested in the stock of this corporation. At one time it was ranked with the highest grade securities in the United States. The income secured from its divi dends has been replied upon with as much confidence as Is the interest payment upon government obliga tions. There was a time when it paid 22 per cent and then against another time when dividends were only 6J4 per cent. But for 30 years the owners of the stock have received dividends until now they are deprived of them. tfpon the Income from sugar stocks and from other stocks In which the puhlio made Investment waa no small part of the reliance placed for a sufficient yearly in come to meet all personal and business as well as family expenses. Hut of a sudden the corporations, beginning s year ago. ceased paying dividends or else post poned the payment of them to some un identified flay In the future. The result was hnt many persons found themselves deprived of Income ttpon which they de pended. In many cases the owner of these stocks were seriously embarraased. Some of them had over-extended their op. eratlons, and were brought face to face with tli. ImnoriPK'. t,At nr securing rtinris. htockholders EmbaiTMaed. For this reason banks In New England and In New York have now for some months received offerings of notes which, the makers of the notes are anxious to sell or discount. The president of one of the largest of the banka In an Industrial district in Connecticut aald today that It was amazing to see the paper laid before the bank officers In the hope that It would be bought. Many of these notoes were signed by men whose business repu tation has been excellent but who found themselves suddenly cut off from Income by reason of the passing or postponement of dividends. They saw no way by which they could obtain relief from their Imme diate embarrassments except by selling their paper. In many cases the bank have been disposed to aid those who have been thus embarrassed. But In New England there are thousands of women whose sole posses sions were In the stocks of corporations which In the past were excellent and regular dividend payers but which have been oompelled pas their dividends. These women stockholders are perhaps the most seriously embarrassed of all. They, of course, possess no business stand ing which would enable them to borrow money at the banks upon their notes. Tha passing of the dividend by the American Sugar company ia the latest of these embarrassments. Passing of Dividends. The passing of these dividends, reflect ing aa it does readjustments which are now In progress, represents causes which originated a year or two ago. It doea not represent sudden or emergency con dltlona of the kind which in the past have preceded bv a. few day the outbreak of panic. While these great corporation whose solvency is unquestioned and whose Industry is among the most important ot any operating in the United States are passing dividends or procrastinating tho payment of them, there are at the same time many evidence that prosperity has already begun. These tnings wnicn mo corporation have been compelled to do are no more than clearing away bad condition which were established In the closing day of the war and contmuea inrouBuuuv first year after the armistice. The president of the sugar company. F.arl D. Babst, in ie planatlon setting forth the reasona wny It was deemed the better part to pass the dividends also said that condition have improved recently and intimated that he has no doubt of continued Improve ment. But dividends cannot be paid upon Immediate Improvement. They must have been earned In the past and because they were not earned It was Inevitable that they be not paid. . Mr Babst Is not alone In his view that conditions are Improving. It ta an opinion commonly held by our Industrial leader and it is certainly the opinion held by those who have gained authority as fi nancial leaders. Pome go so far as to predict, as Judge Gary has already done, that we are soon to enter the greateat era of prosperity the world has ever seen. That prediction was recently made by Postmaster General Hays. It was clearly Intimated In some remarks which were made by Judge bovett of the Union Pa cific Railroad company and It la the view which is held by A. C Bedford, chair man of the board of the Standard Oil company of New Jersey. Building Boom. Insistent and Immediate need of build ing construction la unquestionably caus ing the beginning of very great activity in this Industrs-. Much of this activity Is made in New Tork City. W. Ogden Armour, who Is known to be cautious In the mHklng of statements for publica tion Ik reported to have said a day or two ago that the leaders In his Industry believe that the tide of business has changeded from ebb to the beginning of flood. And J. Leonard ReploKle found while making investigations In Europe, be ilnnlnr about the first of May. that In dustrial and other conditions are so Im proving there as Indirectly at least to be of benefit to the United States.
