To Make Cool Dependent on Your
BOWEX'S
t-n i Relatives at
6 B
By LORETTO C. LYNCH,
Since prohibition clever folks are
concocting satisfying drinks for sum
mcr porch serving. And the writer
has endeavored to collect the recipes
oi'the more attractive ones.
Here is one called blackberry fiz
A quart of blackberries is stewed in
just a little water until soft and
broken. These are strained and
sweetened and then bottled or canned
for future use, it the juice is not to
be used at once. To make the drink
pour one-third of a glass of black
berry syrup into a chilled glass. Add
a tablespoon of lemon juice and some
crushed ice. Then till the glass to
the top with ginger ale.
Fruit punch is sometimes found
flat and lacking in flavor, while it
may contain choice ingredients. Ihi
may be overcome by the addition of
a little orange pekoe tea infusion. A
rounding tablespoon of tea steepet1
in a quart of boiling water for five
minutes is a desirable addition to tne
average gallon of punch.
Here are the proportions for
punch to serve 25 with probably two
cups of punch each: Jo the juice ot
20 oranges and I- lemons add
pound of granulated sugar and boil
live minutes. Cool and then add the
contents of one .No. 10 can of grated
uineaoolc.
AAA a fitiart nf Cftld ta inCtiirtn
h and three quarts of cither plain wa
lls tcr or ADollmarts. 1 tie punch should
be thoroughly chilled before serving.
It may be necessary to add more su
gar. Maraschino cherries may be
added without their juice. The latter
will change the color,
v Of course there are always unex
pected guests dropping in during the
summer days, and it is well to keep
the orange-lemon syrup on hand in a
preserving jar in the refrigerator.
Use 20 oranges and 12 lemons with
a pound of sugar. Half or quarter
of this may be boiled into a syrup.
With the syrup on hand, it takes
but a moment to add the still or
sparkling water once the syrup is
in the glass.
Small cans of sliced pineapple and
a jar or two of maraschino cherries
may be kept on hand for special oc
casions. A bit of pineapple and a
couple of cherries make a real fes
tive drink out of an otherwise com-
if monplace drink.
i Iced tea, iced coffee and iced cocoa
will ever be summer drink favorites.
1 To be at their best they must he
properly made and attractively
served.
Tea should be freshly made
steeped in boiling water for four
minutes. The best results seem to
come from pouring hot tea over ice
into the serving glass.
Lemon is usually used with iced
tea. The lemon should be thinlv
if sliced. Powdered sugar is added.
11 " Iced coffee likewise is made from
U fresh hot coffee poured over enough
ice to both, cool and chill it.
I before it is chilled bv ice. Whinned
cream is served with both iced coffee
and iced cocoa.
The shops are showing some beau
tiful glasses for the serving of these
f sumnw-drinks. Long glass spoons
Will you be dependent on relatives
and friends?
If not you will belong to the lucky
10 per cent of the women of this
country who are financially inde
pendent at that stage.
Suppose jour husband should die
tomorrow, where would you be, fi
nancially speaking ?
Out of every 100 widows 25 are
absolutely dependent on relatives
and friends and 47 are partially so.
At the age of 65 only one person
in 5,000 is free from want, and 90
per cent of the women after the age
of 60 are dependent for their daily
bread.
- According to the 1920 census there
were in the United States 3,170,000
widows and only 1,471,309 widowers.
According to Mr. Habson 63 per cent
of these three million or more wid
ows were left with less than $3,000
each. More than 12,000,000 women
are working to support themselves
on farms, in shops, factories, offices
and of these ea per cent also work
to support some one else.
1 he answer to such questions is
insurance as a medium tor saving
and investment and protection from
dependency in old age, as is shown
bv the results of an investigation
just made by Alice Lakey, chairman
of special insurance investigation
committee, division of thrift, Gen-

Miss Lakev is vice president of the
Cranford. N. T. Village Improvement
association, member of the National
Institute of Social Science, and pub
lisher of "Insurance," 74 Courtlandt
street. New York.
Her orelimmarv work has been to
make a survey ot the benents or me
insurance for "women and to report
the results of this to' the general
federation board of directors, with
the result that she has compiled suf
ficient evidence in the affirmative to
stimulate to the board to a further
consideration of a nation-wide cam
paign for life, insurance policies fcr

in color are quite the fad and add to
the attractiveness of any porch drink.
Fashion Notes
for the riding habit the three-quarter
high silk shape is swagger, as is
the brown derby with the informal
hunting side saddle habit.
Hardy furs will be used for trim
ming this year rather than the soft
pelts, wolf forming one of the favor
ites on expensive models.
A trimming noted for fall sweaters
and knitted dresses is the use of
bands of gray or white-knitted fabric
done in clos-looped stitch in imita
tion krimmer.
Skirt lengths are still an uncer
tainty, street costumes showing the
shorter lengths, while some of the
gowns introduced the ankle length.
Women are now wearing the reg
ular men's knitted bathing suits,
sometimes with the wide white linen
belt but more usually with the trunks
worn very high on the leg, the top
shirt giving the effect of a one-piece
suit.
Xew color notes are decidedly in
favor of brilliant red, both for entire
costumes and for vivid facing and
trimming effects, with the flower
shades bordering on the mauve or
violet, petunia, orchid, fuchsia and
shades of rose and American Beauty
showing close following.
While women wish the appoint
ment of a woman by President Har
ding as a representative to attend the
disarmament conferencce, it is in
teresting to note that leading wom
en urge the appointment on basis of
fitness only.
On this subject, Mrs. Thomas G.
Winter, president of the General
Federation of Women's clubs, said
"The General Federation of Wom
en's clubs would like to see a wom
an on the disarmament conference,
but emphatically demands that ap:
pointmcnt be made on the basis of
fitness only, and not frn political
considerations."
Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt, honorary-president
of the National
League of Women Voters, said:
"If the size of the American dele
gation warrant, a thoroughly quali
fied woman familiar with women's
interests and experienced in interna
tional affairs be appointed a mem
ber. If the number of the commis
sioners is so sharply limited as to
prelude this "e urge that women of
right qualifications be appointed or
such advisory committees as the con
ference may create."
University women in 10 countries
have tormed national associations to
join the women of Great Britain
and America in an international federation.
