The Orpheum Is ready for the opening
of the season which is set for Sunday
matinee, August 21. A force of decorators
and other artisans have persevered for the
past six weeks on renovations, repairs and
changes calculated to contribute to the
dollghts and comforts of Orpheumites. The
ladies' retiring rooms are likely to attract
the special attention of, and elicit a bit
of comment from, the gentler sex. These
have been completely redecorated and fur
nished. The color scheme Is blue and
taupe. The effect is charming and nicely
calculated for lady-dlnty's boodoir. The
scenery has been retouched and throughout
the entire theater from pit to dome there
obtains the, evidence of care and neat
grooming that has always been an Orpeum

ding Bells" at the Rialto next week,
doesn't agree with the person who
scored jazz music by saying: ."Jazz
expresses hysteria and incites to idle
ness.' "I think that's hardly fair to the
millions of people in the United
States who are singing jazz songs and
dancing to popular tunes," said Miss
Talmadge. "It was only a short time
ago that one of our prominent educa
tors said that a singing nation was
secure. People sing when they are
happy."

"Kitchen Party" Dance
Carl Perry's big laughable dance
special, "A Kitchen Party," will be
held at Krug park tonight. A prize
waltz on the kitchen table, a frying
pan race and a dishrag fox trot are
some of the laughs. Kitchen ware
souvenirs of pans, pots, spoons, etc.,
will be given to all. The North
Omaha Activities association will be
out in force. Bryan Burkett. one of
the prime movers of the big day, ex

"Invisible Tides." by Beatrice
Kcan Seymour (Thomas Seltzer,
publisher), is an English novel cf
more than ordinary worth, both for
depth of plot and beauty of Ian-,
guage. That it has been a best
seller abroad should not condemn
it, for it may be that standards
there are higher. It is the story of
circumstances. There is a certain
boldness in the heroine which is said
to characterize many of the younger
women of the post-war period. A
problem novel, in which the war
aids the solution.
The small town from the angle of
childhood is "Colinettc of Redmoon,"
by F. Roney Weir (Small, Maynard
& Co.). It is the story of a resource
ful, imaginative orphan girl who de
ceives an entire village and succeeds
in getting herself adopted into the
sort of home she has always dreamed
of. As a pleasant story of whole
some childhood and cf real people,
it is bound to furnish many with en
joyable summer reading. It is a tale
that can be enjoyed , by youngsters
and grownups as well.
Holman Day is a master of swift
plots and fun, and in "When Egypt
Went Broke," he has added another
jolly volume (Harpers). The tale
has as its pivot the vanity of a New
England miser w ho decided to marry
a young and beautiful girl. Out of
it the town of Egypt won liberation
from financial bondage and wit
nessed a love affair ii which the old
ninchpenny played only a minor role.
