Service and the novels of writers who, like Jack London and James Oliver Curwood, specialize upon tales of the frozen north, probably recall meeting the slang word "hootch" long before it made its rather belated entrance into the colloquial language of the other sections of the United States, for it was in Alaska that the terms had its origin. Here the Indians were distinctly addicted to the spirituous liquor which they brewed at home -and which went by the name of "hpocheno" or "kbotznahoo," the name of a tribe where the mixture was supposed to have originated. White men shortened the word to "hootch" and it was in this form that it became a synonym for whisky in the argot of the mining camps. In more recent years, since the Kightcentli amendment has brought alcoholic liquors into comparative prominence in every day conversation,- "hootch" has become a term applied in spirituous drinks in gen eral and to those which are- made at home in particular, thus retaining its aboriginal meaning.
