vate Note, Offered.
I obediently took up the pages of
Marsden's private letter to my hus
band, which the art editor had put
into the envelope enclosing the offi
cial notification, that Dicky's illustra
tions for the Pennington novel had
been rejected by the distinguished
author.
"Dear Old Boy," the letter began,
in Marsden's accustomed way.
"Thought I'd better write you the
real dope on this mess. Don't go
into one of your usual spasms over
this, though I' will admit it's, enough
to make a man see a snake or two
when he's worked as hard as you
have on those drawings. But you
know what a hen-minded, pompous
old boy Pennington is" I gave a
little gasp of surprise at this point,
for I never can get over my amaze
ment at the flippant, unawed way in
which Dicky and his friends regard
the so-called great ones of the earth
"and as soon as he saw your
sketches he staged a fit on the c.fficc
rug and declared himself offen you,
or words to that effect.
"Of course, Percy wilted at once,
and crawled at Pennington's feet,
asking him if your head on a charger
wouldn't satisfy him. But Claude,
to my surprise really put up quite a
fight for you, and Pennington finally
consented to see you in conference
Monday. Now, for the love of
Mike, don't straddle that high horse
of yours and start for Pike's Peak!
Get this through that ivory dome of
yours Pennington found no fault
with the quality of the sketches. It
was the looks cf the heroine he was
after. You see, those sketches I
showed him when he selected you
for the task of illustrating his brain
che-ild were from 'Day Dream and
the model for that must have been
one tangerine. At any rate, cJd Pen
fell for her with a dull thud that
jarred the office. He said she was
the ideal type of feminine pulchri
tude. But how I am rambling! Of
course, you remember. You heard
him emit the same yelps when you
met him in conference over the
work.
"Makes a Man."
"Where in thunder is that other
model? I remember you told Ten
she was absolutely unavailable, but
you didn't say whether she was dead
or had married a war profiteer. If
the latter, you ought to be good
lcoking and fascinating enough to
get her back long enough for these
sketches, anyway.
"But cheer up, old bo-, Penning
ton isn't the only one, though Percy,
of course-this not to discourage
you, but to show you the importance
of pleasing Pennington is letting
loose a few bla-ats about our proba
bly overrating you, and that Pen
nington's o. k. makes a man, the
lack of it mars him and you know
the usual spiel oh, cuss it all, eld
top! I can't bear to write a screed
like this to you, but I think it's best
to let you know how things stand,
don't you?

member I'm standing by to the last
ditch.
"Yours, as always, . STEVE."
If my heart was heavy when I
began the letter, it outriyalled the
traditional lead whn I finished it.
Only too well did I remember whose
charms the fascinating heroine of
"Dav Dream" perpetuated. Grace
Draper posed for those sketches-

beauty, intellignce and knowledge of
posing Dicky never had ceased la
menting, even though she had
brought infinite trouble, even
tragedy, into our lives.
"It's the End"
"You see what it means, don't
you?" Dicky's voic was heavy,
"listless. It's the end for, me, all
right," he said with all the hope
lessness of the artistic temperament
when criticised upon him. "I might
as well take up sign painting,
Wonder if I could get into the
union?"
There was a bitter note even in
his gibing, which told me how deep
the barb in the. letter had pierced.
I tried, clumsily enough, to alleviate
its hurt.
"But, Dicky. Mr. Marsden says
the quality of the sketches is all
right," I began.
"You read what else he said,
didn't vou?" Dicky retorted gloomi
ly. "That spiel about Percy! He's
the original dum-dum bullet when
he gets started, that tad!"
I had no answer to this, for I
knew, absurd as they seemed,
Dicky's fears that his career was
virtually ended were in some sense
justified by the attitude of "Percy,"
a private "nickname bestowed by
Marsden upon the senior member
of the publishing firm which handled
Pennington's books. "Claude," is
the nickname given by Marsden to
the junior partner, and he is a
square, likable chap with the cour
age of his convictions. But that
"Percy" would sacrifice anybody or
anything to the exigency of the mo-

Statistics for 13 selected manu
facturing industries and in bitumin- ,
ous coal mining show that in June of
this year there was decreased em
ployment in all lines except in the
wool industry, as compared with
June, 1920. There was in the woolen
industry an increase of 3.9 per cent
in the number of persons employed
in June. 1921. over June, 192U.
The most important decreases in
employment shown by these com
parative figures were 4.o per cent in
car building and repairing. 3.6 pcY

amount of the pay rolls in June, 1921,
shows decreases in 13 of the 14 in
dustries. The one increase reported
i-8.3 per cent appears in the wool
en industry. The largest decreases
appearing during this period are 6j.O
per cent in iron and steel, 47.7 per
cent in paper, 40.6 per cent in leather,
and 39.7 per cent in automobiles.
Picks Up Over May.

.and May, 1921, show that in 10 in
dustries there were increases in im.

in June, as compared with May, and
in four a decrease. The largest in
creases, 8.9 per cent, 7.2 per cent,
and 5 per cent, are shown m mens
ready-to-wear clothing, leather and
bituminous coal, respectively. A de
crease of 5.7 per cent appears in iron
and steel and one of 2.4 per cent m
car building and repairing. ,
When comparing June, 1921, with
May 1921, 11 industries show an in
crease in the amount f money paid
to employes and three sh.ow a de
crease. The most important in
creases are 11.8 per cent m coal,
per cent in men's ready-made cloth
ing, and 8.8 per cent in leather Iron
and steel show a percentage decrease
of 17.5.
Some Wage Reductions.
During the period May 15 to June
15 there were wage changes made
by some of the establishments in
principal industries as follows-
Iron and steel All the men in
three establisments were reduced ap
proximately 21 per cent in wages. In
22 plants wage reductions of 20 per
cent were reported, affecting the en
tire force in 21 plants and 94 per
cent of the fcrce in the remaining
plant. Eight mills reported a gen
eral wage rate cut of 15 per cent.
