One woman told me that after an inspection such as I suggest above, she found that she was giving stor age to 17 disgracefully inadequate utensils and that in a kitchenette. Once you have decided on the dis cards, you will find among the news paper advertisements many high class shops announcing business stimulat ing sales for the warm days. Every housewife has attempted to bake a layer cake only to find the pan just sufficiently large to prevent another pan being placed in the oven at the same time. This necessitates baking one layer at a time not only a waste of time, but of high costing fuel. Since vou cannot take your oven to the shop with you, the next best thing to do is to take a paper pat tern of the floor of your oven with you. The merchant can readily fit the combination to it. How about some of the new com bination aluminum utensils. For in stance, the kettle you buy for boil ing water may be quickly converted into a double boiler. Then there are triple saucepans. They fit in c ombination over the one gas burner. By their aid one may cook potatoes and two other vegetables for the meal with the minimum expenditure of fuel. Many shops are showing combina tion sets of knives for the home kitchen. Some sets include a small but effective cleaver fq the bones that ruin the edge of the unfortunate knife. The spatula or palette knife, a limber knife so useful in removing the last of the batter from bowls or for flipping cakes, is a most use ful knife about the kitchen. More than one vegetable paring knife is needed in even a small kitchen. There ate some excellent knife sharpening machines. And they soon pay for themselves in sharpener's bills saved and in the joy derived from the use of a really sharp knife. Ask the clerk in your favorite shop to tell you the. advantages of each variety. Of the materials for cook pots, agate, enamelware of the first quali ty and aluminum are still among the best liked. Buy only a few at first during replacement, but buy the best. A Well-equipped kitchen with durable utensils of just the right sort undoubtedly lightens the labor of getting the usual three squares a day. 6RID& I ORIS BUIBStfO. Dressing. Many people when they go into a restaurant for dinner order Thous and Island dressing on their salad simply because it is never served at home. It is quite easily made and there is no reason that it should not be served frequently in the home. Following is a tried recipe: Thousand Island Dressing. - 1 tablespoon minced onion. 1 tablespoon minced dill pickle. 1 tablespon minced beets. 1 tablespoon minced hard boiled egg- 1 tablespoon minced chives. 1 tablespoon minced pimeto. 1 tablespoon minced parsley. 1 cup mayonnaise dressing. 2 tablespoons chili sauce. 1-2 teaspoon Worchestershire sauce. Add the mixed ingredients to the mayonnaise with the seasonings and let stand ten minutes or ' more to ripen and chill. Cowardly Tenor. Rub Why do, you prefer to sing in a quartet? . Even the early fall imports show no abatement of hun ger for these artless bsgs of dresses with an elastic around the waist or one confined merely to the sides. One tees so much of this mode that one turns with -relief to more inventive styles. Decidedly unusual is the turn taken by the above costume of black satin and white crepe. The scalloped collar, together with the underskirt, is trimmed with embroidery stitch of black, silk, and the scallops of the former are repeated above the bands of such stitching on the skirt. The sash is particularly graceful. The hat of white milan worn with this is faced in black satin, and points to the popuarity of the poke shape. N JAPAN it is considered lucky to be married on a hill or mountain. If the church is too warm during the ceremony a quarrel will ensue; if too cold, friends will prove false. If it rains on the bride as she goes to be married, she will see pleasure come from all her present trials. An evil spirit is going to destroy the love life of the couple if a door squeaks about the time of the cere mony. Loud laughter heard near the time of the ceremony is the premonition of tears. To see a streak of lightning just before the wedding ceremony is a happy omen. The first person to come into the room prepared for a wedding, who does not go out before the cere mony, will have good luck tor a year. It is gooa luck if ycu can hear a pin drop when the bride is going out from the wedding. If the groom speaks to another woman before he speaks to his wife after the ceremony, there will be a woman marring the happiness of the union. If the father gives the bride away and in so doing hesitates, she will return to his care again To conceal a horseshoe beneath the flowers under which she is mar ried brings good fortune to a brid-i. The Chinese believe that where the bride is older than the groom, the first child will be a girl. For a child to appear in the aiste of the church while the wedding party is being waited for or is in the church, foretells beyond a doubt that a large family will come to the couple. It is unlucky to have another speak to the bridegroom after the ceremony before the bride has called him by name. In some places the motions of bride and groom are curiously watched when they first begin to walk around after the ceremony. If they face each other they will live happily together; if they turn their backs they will separate; if the groom walks around the bride he will be kind to her; if she walks around him he will be unkind. A bride should not make her own wedding dress; she is sewing her shroud. Never mark your linen or any thing for use in your married life with the initials of your fiance, as it is said that you will never have oc casion to use the initialed articles if you do. ' To send a maid's dowry to her fu ture home and find the door locked is a sign of bad luck. After the bride's clothes have been "sifted" in China, contact with them is carefully avoided; for shou1! any person wearing mourning, or an expectant mother, even so much as touch them before they are taken to the bride's new home, it is regard ed as unlucky; death in her hus band's family or quarrels and mis understandings are sure to occur. A girl should never let her future husband see her in anything of her wedding trousseau, as it is bad luck. A bride shwld never have in her trousseau anything . trimmed with ivy leaves. If the bride's outfit is not paid for at the time of the wedding, death wiJl come into the new home and taRe away one of its first little ones. In Russia, when a girl in moder ate circumstances is to be married, her girl friends sew her trousseau. An omen has it that "a stitch pulled out brings the bride bad luck," and it sometimes happens that a jealous helper will sew wrongly and then pull out the stitches to avenge her self on the bride. . In Japan a bride and groom must not wear garments of purple, or their love will soon fade. If a bride tears her bridal dress, it is a sign of much trouble. For the groom to step on the bride's dress is an omen of ill to her from his hand. If the bride's dress, on her way to the altar, catches on anything so as to detain her it is a bad omen. If you marry in fawn color you will cross the ocean once. Bad luck to cut up your wedding dress. Keep it for luck. To be married in a dress that has been torn or has a hole in it is dis astrous. If the bride wears some article at the altar worn by her own mother at the altar she will insure a long married life to herself. If you hold a wedding dress on your lap for five minutes you will be a bride in a year, and it you make a wish it will come true. Mean Things. Alice Gladys' parents spoiled her elopement. Recipes Pineapple Marmalade. t plneappla 3 lemon. 3 curs sugar 3 cup sredril raisin ' Fare pineapple and cut in small pieces, saving all the juice. Add sugar and grated rind and juice of lemons. Cook slowly until very thick about 40 minutes. Add raisins. Cook 10 minutes and poti into senlized glasses and seal wit parathne. this makes about si glasses. Two cans grated pineappl may be substituted for the fresh i desired. Quince and Raisin Marmalade t cupa quinces i cups sugar 4 cupa wpter IVi cupa Seede.1 Raisins. Wash, remove seeds and cut up enough quinces to make 6 cups, Cover with water and cook slowly until soft about l hour. Rub througl a strainer. Add sugar and raisins and cook slowly until thick about 15 minutes. Stir occasionally to preven burning. Pour into sterilized glasses and seal with paraffine. This makes about 6 glasses. Raisin and Fig Conserve. 3 rups dried figs Gratd rind of 1 orange 3 cupa water ft cup lemon juice 1 cup sugar 3 cups chopped raisins V, cup orang.i juice 3 cups broken walnut meats Chop figs. Cover with water and soak over night. Add sugar, orange juice and rind, lemon juice ana taisins and cook slowly until tmcK about 1 hour. Add nuts and cook minutes. Pour into sterilized glasses and seal with paraffine. This makes about 6 glasses. Cranberry Conserve. 4 cups cranberries 1 orange 1 cup seeded raisins 3 cups sugar 1 Cup broken walnut meats Cut cranberries in halves and wash in a strainer to remove as many seeds as possible. Chop raisins and orange ouio and rina. Aaa cran berries and sugar and cook until thick, about 30 minutes. Add mits and cook five minutes. Pour into sterilized glasses and seal with paraffine. "ihis makes about six glasses. Cranberry and Raisin Marmalade, 3 c seeded raisins, liJ c. sugar. 3 r. cranberries. 1 t. salt. 3 c. water. Put raisins through food chopper. Add cranberries, water, sugar and salt. Cook slowly until thick about 45 minutes. Pour into steril ized glasses and seal -with paraffine. This makes about six glasses. Lemons Are Healthy and Pleasing In the olden times sailors who took long trips and ate no fresh vegetables and fruits for weeks or months were likely to fall victims to scurvy. Finally a cure; or a partial cure, for it was found in lemon juice. Of late years scientists have been making a study of scurvy, its cause anil its cure and of conditions that make the body proof against this disease. They have discovered a substance called vitamine C, which seems to prevent, and even to cure. this disease. It is found in many foods, among them tomatoes and such citrus fruits as oranges, grape fruit and lemons. Lemons, therefore, have a new im portance in the diet, according to food specialists in the United States Department of Agriculture. They are no longer to be valued simply for their flavor, but also as a source of one of these necessary substances, Lemons can be used in all sorts of ways in the preparation ' of meals. There is a long list of beverages and desserts in which lemon juice is used, as well as a number of delicious sauces that expert cooks have in vented to serve on fish and meat. In taking the British census many artful subterfuges were indulged in by women to escape publicity re cording their closely guarded secret of advancing age. It is said that hundreds of business woman living in lodgings in London spent . the night with friends to escape the census taker. Not having a large assortment of shoes in that size he measured the woman s shoe and found that her foot reallv measured to a 5 D shoe. He told her this, but she denied it. She rather resented the suggestion that she had a foot that was wide. She preferred her double A, even when it was an 8. However, they com promised, she and the shoe sales man, and she went away with a 6 C. As this woman had worn her shoes the hall of her foot came where the instep should have come. The long, narrow shoe was not suited to her foot at all, hence she had to get it out of all proportion in length. There are all sorts of misfittings of shoes nowadays, but in the majority of cases these are due to the people who buy the shoes who have certain prejudices and preconceived notions of what size shoes they should wear. If they feel convinced their foot is narrow then the salesman simply has to give them a shoe long enough in that width to accommodate the foot. With the long, narrow last that still seems to persist, most women do buy shoes that are much longer than their feet in order to be able to wear them with anything like comfort. Now, it really is a very good plan to let the shoe dealer measure your foot carefully before fitting your shoe. In shoe shops where a spe cialty is made of fitting unusual feet, trained salespeople not only measure the feet, but feel of the bony struc ture of the foot and make careful observations so as to know just what type of shoe it requires. Sugared Ham. Next time you purchase a piece of hain sugar both sides of it the night before you intend cooking it. When you get ready to prepare it the sugar will have drawn out the salt and you will not have to pre boil the ham. The sugar need not be removed before preparing, as it adds to the richness in flavor after the ham is cooked.
