any plan. And at last Mr. Meadow
Mouse announced that he would have
to think of one himself. So he sat
down and looked very wise, while
Chirpy Cricket fiddled for him, be
cause Mr. Meadow Mouse explained
that his wits always worked better
when somebody made music for him.
Chirpy Cricket fiddred and fiddled
and fiddled. Now and then he paused
to ask Mr. Meadow Mouse how his
wits were working. And each time
that he inquired, Mr.- Meadow Mouse
assured him that his wits were work
ing very spryly and he expected to
have an idea any moment.
Well, the whole night passed in
that fashion. Toward morning Mr.
Meadow Mouse murmured that he
was too hungry to do any more
thinking. He said he was going into
the fields to find something to eat.
But lie promised to set his wits to
working again the following evening.
So Chirpy agreed to meet Mr.
Meadow Mouse at dusk and fiddle
for him some more.
Then Chirpy hurriedly gathered
some blades of grass and carried
them home with him. For he was
hungry too. And when the day
came he spent it between dozing and
nibbling the grass and hoping that
Mr. Meadow Mouse wouldn't forget
his promise.
But Mr. Meadow Mouse didn't
forget. He was on hand bright and
early at dusk, waiting for Chirpy
when he came crawling out of his
hole in the twilight.
Chirpy had scarcely settled himself
and begun his fiddling when Simon
Screecher's wail floated over the or-1
chard. And when he heard it Chirpy j
couldn t help jumping. He jumped
right over Mr. Meadow Mouse and
hid under the fence. And he wouldn't
come out for a long time, though
Mr. Meadow Mouse called and called
to him that he didn't believe there
was really any danger, it was so
early in the evening.
When Chirpy finally did creep out
from under the fence he told Mr.
Meadow Mouse that he couldn't do
any more fiddling that night.
"Simon Screecher has upset me,"
he said. "I don't feel cheerful. And
I can't play a single note unless I'm
in good spirits."
"My wits seem to be working to
night, even without music, Mr.
Meadow Mouse informed him with
a knowing air. You re worried. I
can see that. Now, the thing for
you to do is to stop worrying your
self and get Simon Screecher to do
it. Let Simon -shiver and shake"
How can I do that?" Chirp v
asked him. "I hope you can teil
me; for I certainly don't know of
a way."
"Didn't you notice his cry a little
while ago?" Mr. Mtdow Mouse
asked. "Didn't you notice how his
voice trembled?"
"Yes!" Chirpy said. "Yes! Now
that you speak of it, I remember that
his voice shook a good deal."
"Ah!" Mr. Meadow Mouse ex
claimed. "Something had frightened
him. Now, you had just begun to
fiddle before he cried out. And
there's no doubt in my mind that
your music scared Simon Screecher.
So all you need do to feel safe from
him is to fiddle a plenty every night.
If you do that you'll have him so
worried he'll never trouble you."
Chirpy Cricket felt so happy all
at once that he began a lively tune.
And sure enough! Simon Screecher
squalled almost immediately.
"That proves it!" Mr. Meadow
Mouse exclaimed. ,And then he said
good evening and ran off to the place
where Farmer Green had been
threshing oats, feeling very well
pleased with himself.
Chirpy Cricket took pains to fol
low Mr. Meadow Mouse's advice.
And neither Simon Screecher nor
his cousin Solomon Owl troubled
Chirpy all the rest of the summer.
He fiddled the nights away with
more pleasure than ever before. And
by the time fall came all his neigh
bors agreed that he had done even
more than his part to make the sum
mer gay for everybody.

Bishop Tihen Is Guest of

Pope Benedict yesterday, presenting
a report of his diocese which the
pontiff found to be most satisfactory.
Later, Bishop Tihen introduced to
the pope a group of 30 American
pilgrims, to whom Pope Benedict de
:vercd a short address.
The pontiff said he greatly appre
iatcd the visit of the Americans
.specially because of the difficulties
of travel at present and the oppres
sive heat. He imparted the apostolic
benediction at the close of his talk.

Five carloads of long-fed, heavy
breves were brought to the stock
yards yesterday by T. M. Carraher
of Spalding, who sold the animals to
a representative of an eastern buyer
for shipment to the Atlantic coast.
The stock brought the fancy price,
for large cattle, of $9.60.
All of the cattle brought in by
Mr. Carraher were bought on the
local market last year as feeders and
he made a comfortable cleanup on
the deal and will put in another
hunch of feeders.
The top price of $10 for the day
was received yesterday by Henry
Miergord at the stock yards for a
load of mixed yearlings averaging
845 pounds, which he brought iu
from beemer. Mr. Miergord said
the cattle made him a little profit
in spite of the low price received
and he expected to stock up with
feeders for this winter.
An enormous supply of grain will
have to be used on the cattle feed
lots this fall in Nebraska, accord
ing to C. O. Nelson of Greeley, who
was a visitor at the local stock yards
yesterday looking over the market.
Mr. Nelson said there was a larse
amount of last year's corn in the
bins of the farmers of the state and
the present year would show an un
usually large yield, it the tanners
don't make arrangements to feed a
lot of this grain they will be com
pelled to build a large number of
cribs to store the surplus," said Mr.
Nelson.
Brothers Who Engaged in
Rumpus Must Live Apart
Mike and Joe Bernica, brothers,
were unable to live in a state of
brotherly love in their South Side
home, so they will live apart, ac
cording to a ruling by Police Judge
Wappich yesterday morning.

extenuating circumstances the defen
dant asserted that John had been
training to be a prize fighter and
