Vacation.
One cannot say for a certainty
just what will be the thing one
would most enjoy a week or a month
or particularly several months from
now.
Moods and needs and desires
change with the parsing of. time.
Then why try to. thrust a certain
form of change or amusement tipon
a person weeks or months ahead
merely to set your own mind at ease
that the ones involved may be sure
of a vacation.
If you know how you want to take
your vacation, even a year ahead,
well and good for you, but all are not
so constituted alike and especially
when it is not to be a partnership af
fair at all but each for thdr individ
ual needs.
A person might be glad and will
ing for the sake of companionship to
do a certain thing at a certain time
even if it cut off all hope of any
other recreation.
But when companionship does not
enter in at all the wants and needs
of the one you seek to favor may
take a very different turn from any
thing you could possibly guess, and
yet be perfectly legitimate.
If you are the man of the house
you will have learned that what is
good for big corporations is best
in home finance and you will have
decided and allotted a certain sum
for each to do as they like within
reasn each year.

Seafaring Man Held Here;
Dope Found in His Room
Bernard Murphy, styling himself
a seafaring man, arrested here on
the charge of illegal posession of
drugs, put up a $2,000 cash bond
yesterday in federal court. He is
held to the grand jury after a hear
ing before United States Commis
sioner Boahler.
Murphy was enroute to join a crew
on the Pacific coast when arrested
because of dope found in the lining
of the dresser drawer in his room.
He maintains the drugs belonged to
a previous inhabitant of the room.
Dr. P. W. Sawyer, colored phy
sician, put up a $1,000 bond for
Llewelyn Taylor, on the same
charge.

Revenge of Backbiters.
If you have reason to believe that
people are slandering you bite the
corner of your apron and the back
biters will bite their tongues. This
is fo.r women. Another way, applic
able to both sexes, is to pinch your
car and the person who is "talking
about you" will bite his tongue.
These charms work, of course, by
sympathetic magic like causes like.
Your apron is a substitute of the
standerous tongue of your traducer;
you bite it and the slanderer, by
reason of the magic sympathy, set
up, responds by doing actually what
you have done immitatively. Pinch
ing the ear is a good simulation of
biting the tongue and reacts upon
the backbiter in the desired man
ner. It is, moreover, an especially
appropriate act of simulation in
such cases because of the connection
between tingling ears and "people
talking about you" a superstition
which has already been dealt with in
this series. These superstitions are
widespread as are all the supersti
tions connected with sympathetic
magic. It is worthy of note that
while the doctrine of sympathetic
magic was one of the earliest re
sults c.f the efforts of primitive man
tn establish a relation between
cause and effect so a belief in that
same magic is the most universal
of superstitions today.

Police Unearth Revolvers,
Jewelry, in Raid on Home
In a raid on the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Smith Hines, 1011 Capitol ave
nue yesterday, detectives found
$500 worth of watches, rings, re
volvers and various other articles.
Hines and his wife are temporarily
charged with investigation. Detec
tives believe that Hines' home has
been a "fence" for the disposal of
stolen property.
Hines was arrested last month-,
when police raided his home and
found wearing apparel and jewelry
to the extent of $300. He has a case
now pending in the district court,
detectives said.
Funeral Thursday for Man
Who Died at Power Post
Funeral services for Chris J.
Christensen of Council Bluffs, who
was found dead Tuesday afternoon
in the Central substation of the Ne
braska Power company, Twentieth
and Harney streets, will be held at
2 o'clock this afternoon at Hulse
& Riepen funeral parlors. Burial
will be in Springwell cemetery.
No inquest will be held into the
cause of Christcnsen's death, the
county authorities being satisfied he
died of heart trouble. Christensen
was an operator at the station. His
widow survives.

Mrs. Nellie Seelcy filed suit in dis

who was struck by an automobile at
Twentv-fifth avenue and Douglas
street. April 1, and died in the Ford
hospital.
Mrs. Seeley alleges the automobile

Smith at a high rate of speed and
carelessly.
Soft Drink Man Imbibes
"Hard" Liquor, Wife Says
Mary Faber alleges in a petition
for divorce from Christian Faber
filed yesterday in district court, that
though he is the manager of a soft
drink parlor, he comes home filled
with hard drink and that he has
struck her. His monthly stipend at
the soft drink parlor is $75 and he
has $18,000 worth of property, she
alleges. She asks for the $75 as
monthly alimony. They were mar
ried four months ago.
Dan Butler's Landlord
Sues Him for $840 Rent
The Drake Holding company No.
2 has brojight suit in municipal
court against City Commissioner
Butler for $840 alleged to be rent
due; also a suit against William
Whittakcr for $660, on a similar
claim.
These suits are the outcome of
the controversy which the Drake
company had with its tenants.

J. L. Hiatt has sold his fine honit,

Nicholas for a consideration of $40,
000. The Hiatt home is of Colonial
