With difficulty I kept myself from
frankly staring at my friend. I had
never known any of- Dicky's non
sense to disturb her composure in
the least. But where Robert Savarin
is concerned she ceases to become
the perfectly poised women of the
world, appears to revert back to the
period when she was the adoring
neophyte and he the master, uncon
scious of her feeling, who, out of lu
nate kindness, first set her feet in
the path she was to tread so success
fully. I saw Robert Savarin knit his eye
brows eer so slightly, knew that
Dicky's quip had annoyed him, and
I resolved to imitate Miss Jones's
tactful exit.
"What time will Dr. Petit be
here?" I asked Lillian, casually.
"He said about 10 o'clock," she re
turned, flashing me a grateful, com
prehending look.
"Then there won't be any use of
our going home until he comes," I
said, adding, with a compelling eye
upon Dicky, "but I will just have
time to get some curtain stuff at the
Southampton shops which I must
have. My curtains from Marvin will
not fit those windows, and it would
be a shame to cut them down."
"Oh. you mustn't cut those lovely
draperies!" Lillian exclaimed. "I
think you are very wise. They are
not suited for a farmhouse, anyway."
"It Wasn't Your Fault"
"Why don't you cut over the win
dows to fit 'em?" Dicky asked, edg
ing toward the door, and I knew that
he was as eager to get away as 1
was.
"Uncle Dicky!" Marion's voice
sounded imperiously. "Come here
and kiss me before you go. You
haven't kissed me yet."
"I didn't know I dared to," Dicky
replied, striding toward the bed
Robert Savarin moved aside as he
did so, and Dicky, slipping his arms
around Marion's slight figure, started
to raise her to a sitting posture, be
fore Marion and I who had heard
Dr. Pcttit's injunction against such
a procedure could stop him.
A quick moan of pain from Marion
startled us all. Dicky put her quick!
back upon the pillows, and her moth
er Hew to her side.
"What is it, darling?" she asked
with apparent composure, but I saw
that her lips were drained of color,
i and I knew that the same fear which
had clutched my heart was obsessing
her. Had the child escaped death
only to face disablement, perhaps
permanently.'
'Nothing much, mother." Marion
smiled bravely, but with an evident
effort It s only a place in my back
that hurt when Uncle Dicky raised
me
"Somebody ought to take me out
and shoot me, Dick declared re
morsefully, bending over the child.
"It wasn't your fault, Uncle
Dicky, Marion declared loyally. "I
wanted to sit up so bad I forgot all
about what Dr. Pettit said, and raised
myself."

WHY
Are There Two High Tides a Day?
When we remember that the tides
are caused by the attraction of the
moon, acting upon the fluid portions
of the earth's surface and drawing
them toward it, it is difficult to see
why there should be two high tides
every day instead of one as the
earth turns around only once a day.
But we must bear in mind that the
moon not only pulls the water to
ward itself on the side of the globe
that is closest to it at the moment,
but that it also pulls the earth to
ward it in the same manner, though,
on account of the comparative rig
idity of the solid portion of the globe
we are not conscious of this fact. In
other words, high tide which occurs
at full moon on one side of the
earth is also occompanied by high
tide on the other side of the sphere
because the water there banks up
as tne eartn is literally pulled away
from it.
Now, as the earth makes one com
plete revolution every 24 hours, it
ioiiows that mere must be two high
tides one of them due to the attrac
tion of the moon on the far side of
the globe 12 hours later. In the in
tervening time, of course, there is
also a low tide approximately every
12 hours or two high tides and
two low tides every day.
How can an only child, a girt, be
kept from getting too "old in her
ways."
Going to school, working and
playing with other children will
prove all this girl needs. Invite her
friends to your home and allow he'
to go. to their homes.

Tunison, an Omaha lawyer with a
wheat farm near Kimball, Neb., and
another near Chemung, Colo., de
clares. The two towns lie close to
gether near the Nebraska-Colorado
line, and yet the grain rate from
Chemung to its market at Kansas
City is 91-2 cents less than the rate
from the Nebraska town of Kimball
to its Missouri river market,
Omaha.
In reply to protests from Mr.
Tunison, W. S. Rodman, president
of the American State bank at Kim
ball; J. A. Kuhn, traffic manager of
the Omaha Grain exchange, and C.
E. Childe, traffic manager of the
Omaha Chamber of Commerce, it is
stated by the general freight agent
of the Union Pacific, Charles J.
Lane, that he has never met a man
competent to pass definitely on the
precision of any given rate, lie de
clares in a letter that rates (are not
controlled by distance or geographi
cal location, but by "reasonableness."
He also makes the point that rales
on grain shipped from Omaha to St.
Louis, Chicago or the seaboard, are
the same as those of any other Mis
souri river point, regardless of
whether or not Omaha is farther from
these points. He shows that farmers
at Creston. Ia., pay 5 cents a bushel
more to ship their grain to Chicago
than the rate from Omaha to Chicago
for grain grown in Nebraska, lie
also cites stations in Wyoming,
South Dakota. Oklahoma and Texas
points to markets the same distance
away as is Kimball from Omaha, and
with rates 10 cents a bushel higher,
and even more.
Tunison's Reply to Lane.
Tn reply to Mr. Lane, who indi
cates his belief that wheat growers
of Kimball and other western Ne
braska points are not entitled to re
lief, Mr. Tunison has written in
part as follows:
"The first statement of your let
ter i that you have never met any
one competent to pass definitely up
on the precision of any given freight
rate. I will admit that freight rate
making is an exceedingly complicat
ed and involved problem, the solution
of which requires a consideration of
a number of facts and circumstances.
However, the very fact that it is dif
ficult to- pass upon the precision of a
given rate is no reason for adhering
to a rate once fixed, and is all the
more reason why a rate which clear
ly appears unreasonable should be
changed.
"You state that I have seemingly
singled out a shipping point near the
Kansas-Colorado line, .Chemung, sub
stantially the same distance froinv
Kansas City as is Kimball, Neb.,
from Omaha. I own land and a'i
raising wheat at both points and be
couse of this fact became acutely
aware of the difference in freight
rates. However, your tariffs show
that the entire western Nebraska
territory of the Union Pacific system
is on a much higher level of grain
rates to the Missouri river than is
the western Kansas and eastern
Colorado territory.
"The next statement is that after
grain from Kimball gets to Omaha, it
can ride to St. Louis, to Chicago and
to the Atlantic seaboard for the same
late as grain from Kansas City. It is
my understanding that the Union
Pacific system does not haul grain
from either Omaha or Kansas City
to any of the points you mention.
That service is performed by other
railroads and I assume that the reve
nue for same is received by such
ether railroads. Such being the fact.
1 cannot see whv the rates on grain
from the Missouri river to the points
you mention afford any justification
for the Union Pacific system to
charge the Kimball producer 10 cents
per 100 more to get his grain to
Omaha than it charges the Chemung
producer to get his i?rain to Kansas
City, the same distance. If the At
lantic seaboard or the other ultimate
markets you mention are the poinls
at which the basic price of grain is
fixed, and the rate from the Missouri
river to these points s the same from
either Omaha or Kansas City, then
the action of your ra'lroad, the Union
racihe system, in charging the Kim
ball producer 10 cents per 100 morerf-1
nan Chemung producer to get his
grain the same distance to the Mis
souri river, simply penalizes the Kim
ball producer that much.
$21,000 for One Train.
There is no question but what
you are working cheaper for eastern
Colorado than you are for western
Nebraska. As to the reasonableness
of the Kimball-Omaha rate per se, a
carload of wheat of say 1,500 bushels
weighs 90,000 pounds. At 35 cevts
per 100 the freight irom Kimball to
Omaha is $324. It is down grade all
the way. A trainlcad of say 65
'.rs of wheat, picked up in Kimball,
Cheyenne and Deuel counties, Ne-
raska, if given a good start, would
'most roll into Omaha of its own
momentum. At the rate vou charge.
you receive over $21,000 for bringing
me tram to umana. l nis appears to
me to be an unreasonably high
charge.
"VVith respect to the rates you
mention at the conclusion of your
letter, from points in other states to
terminals in other states, none of
which are on your system, it seems
to me that the applicability thereof
to the subject under discussion is
doubtful. The railroads who make
the hauls in question may not be
able to operate as efficiently and
through as rich a country as does
your system, or they may operate
more efficiently and through a bet
ter country. In either case, the rates
you mention do not afford a con
crete, actual basis for comparison,
such as the Chemung and Kimball
rates do afford." ,
