By HARLEY The wheel of fortune I The asso ciates of Mr. Keely in the year 1873 must have thought they had found it. The "hydro-pneumatic-pulsating-vaccuo-engine" was his name for it, but everyone to whom he showed it was sure that it would bring them all a fortune. It was the result of a discovery he had made when he was a boy of 13, he said. He had wondered why the windows shook to certain notes of the organ in a nearby church. For years he experimented, and at last in his Philadelphia workshop he gave an exhibition of a new invention. It was a mysterious-looking contriv ance, and the explanation that Keely gave of its workings and his names for the various parts surrounded it with more mystery still. The great wheel they saw he said was moved by "apergy." While they watched it revolving apparently ceaselessly, Mr. Keely talked of "triune currents of a polar flow of force," "reflex action of gravity," "chords of mass," "sympathetic out reaches of distance," "depolar etheric waves," and many other abstruse things. Then, to demonstrate, the possi bilities of the new force he had dis covered, he struck a tuning fork, and a brass ball span around at 600 rev olutions a minute. He scraped a violin bow across the tuning fork and another apparatus lifted an enor mous weight exerting a pressure of 25,000 pounds to the square inch, he said. More people came to see the demonstrations in the Keely labor atory. Soon a group of New York financiers were talking of forming a company to exploit the invention. Keely was now the talk of America. "I can run a train of 30 cars from Philadelphia to New York at a mile a minute," he boasted. "The power win oe got out ot as much water as you can hold in the palm of your hand. A bucket of water contains enough of this force, I have dis covered, to move the world out of its course. A steamship can be run &o fast with it that it would be split in two." The company was soon formed and the capital subscribed. Every week there were pilgrimages of en gineers, scientists and capitalists to see the wonderful eneines at work. AH were wonderstruck by what Mr. is-eeiy had achieved. It seemed more like a miracle than a feat of enei- iiceririK. nis explanations were even more puzzling, when he offered them. However, the machinery worked. and that was all that was required, so lar as the capitalists could see. ' With the reports published from time to time, more and more monev was subscribed to the Keely Motor company." The shareholders, ex pected that the company would soon have the monopoly that would cause all the existing machinery of the world to be scrapped. International New Servic AT HIN o RD OF HIM MATTHEWS.' labor, all soon would go, and the Keely motor would run the world. Months went by, yet still no en gine left the Keely workshops. The inventor was experimenting further, so as to make his invention perfect, the directors announced. More capital was required and it was sub scribed readily. The pilgrimages to Philadelphia still continued. Mr. Keely had been busy, there was no doubt of that. He had designed a new engine for which he had another new name. This would startle the world, every body agreed who saw it working. Years went by and always it was the same story for the public and the shareholders: Mr. Keely. was ex perimenting with a new engine and more money was required. In 1888 some of the shareholders of the Keely Motor company began to get impatient Court proceed ings were instituted against the in ventor to compel him to explain the workings of his contrivances. But he steadfastly refused to divulge even the principle of them, and the judge committed him to jail. He was soon released, however, and a Mrs. Bloomfield Moore was fi nancing him with $100,000 for further experiments. From then on people continued to hear of him. And for all the scep ticism that developed none could say that his engine did not work, though the explanation was beyond every body. From visits to his workshops hundreds went back convinced that the man had discovered some secret force of nature. At the Sandy Hook proving grounds he gave a demon stration with a new propelling ap paratus that satisfied many skeptics. For 25 years the public heard about Keely's achievements. He was always making some great dis covery or building an invention that would revolutionize - industry. As soon as one shareholder of the com pany got tired of only bearing, there were plenty to buy his stock, con vinced that they would see soon the Keely motor working everywhere. And always John Keely had money, not only to live comfortably, but to experiment and build engine after engine. In the year 1898 John W. Keely died. By this time the public had subscribed over $5,000,000 to de velop his discoveries. In return they had 3,000 engines which he had built in the 25 years since the estab lishment of the company, and the bundles of manuscripts which his patent attorney, Charles B. Collier, said contained enough information to enable him and Slyvester Thomas, a director of the company, to make the invention a payable proposition. But the manuscripts were as mys tifyying as the utterances of the author in his lifetime. They also spoke of the wonders that could be accomplished by an engine built on the principle of the 'inter-etheric liberator" and the "resonator.- A visit to the workshop was more enlightening. There it was found that the steel globe, which he called the "sympathetic negative transmit ter" was built to contain compressed air. A fine platinum tube (supposed to have been a wire) carried the air to the "Keely motor." It was this force that made the wheel revolve, that lifted weights and performed all the engineering marvels. But do not think that John Keely 121 Iwrt Fatum Siwvict. Inc. $4,000 Just an Ordinary Gain This is the increase in price in a year on theDrexel home property. Tenth and William Streets An investor bought the property last year for $11,500. He sold it a few days ago for $15,500. This is not an extraordinary piece of real estate. Just the usual run of stuff. Its price went up because a new demand for it arose during the year. That "NEW DEMAND" is what causes all real estate to in crease in value. In a growing city, the "NEW DE MAND" is always coming on, be cause there are more people al ways coming on. Omaha is constantly growing. Thus, there will always be the "NEW DEMAND." Realtors know where the NEW DEMAND is most likely to occur first. They know because they are always studying the growth of a city. After vot ing to make the proposed veterans bureau an independent organization responsible directly to the president, the senate finance subcommittee to day finally completed the redrafting of the Sweet bill consolidating the various government agencies dealing with soldiers' relief. The subcommittee will make its report to the whole committee toj morrow. It is doubtful whether the whole committee will ratify the re port without considerable discussion of the amendment making the bu reau a separate institution, although the president's message today may hasten action. Another influence which may push the measure for ward is a newly developed tendency on the part of some members to view the Sweet bill as a handy instrument for counteracting disappointment among ex-service men over the prospective sidetracking of the bonus. The amendment making the veter ans bureau an independent oganiza tion represents the chief change in the bill as it passed the house. This recommendation conforms to the recommendations of the Dawes com mission and is designed, according to Senator Smoot of Utah, chairman of the subcommittee, to eliminate red tape which has hampered the work of administering relief to disabled veterans. The provision in the Swee) bill under whichminor disabilities in the 10 per cent classification may be treated at the expense of the govern ment, was left intact by the suBcom mittee. The watch was stolen, he complained. had not the qualifications for the work he undertook. When a young man he had been a circus performer. Afterwards he took to conjuring and made himself an adept at sleight-of-hand, tricks. In the early days one of his best tricks was to make an appliance he called a reasonator lift weights. In making it a part of the "Keely" motor he had only put it to greater use and profit. And now, though all knew its secret, the wheel lay still. Through its whirling spokes for 25 years people had caught glimpses of their desires. Yet it was only the force of their desires in the shape of $5,000,000 that had made it re volve. Instead of riches had come disillusionment. For Mr. Keely alone had been the wheel of fortune. Copyright, H21, By The McClure Newi paper Syndicate. Consult a Realtor ESTATE BOARD 1
