story of Balzac, many screen as
pirants wrote to Mr. Balzac asking
him to use his influence in getting

Farmer Sustains $10,000
Loss in Fire by Lightning

cial.) John McDonnell, farmer of
the western section of Minnehaha
county, suffered a heavy loss when
lightning struck and set fire to the
elevator on his place. The elevator,
which contained a large quantity of
clover seed, together with adiacent
buildings, including a 250-foot hog
shed and barn, were destroyed by the
flames. His loss is estimated at
more than $10,000. Insurance to the
amount of $4,800 was carried.

Washington, July 11. America's
foreign trade fell off more than
$3,000,000,000 during the fiscal year
ending June 30, a summary of trade
issued today by the Department of
Commerce shows:
The slump was about evenly il
vided between exports and imports.
Exports fur the year aggregated
$6,519,000,000, as compared with
$8,108,000,000 the year previous,
while imports amounted to $3,666,
000,000 as against $5,238,000,000, the
previous year. The trade balance in
kvor of the United States for the
year was $2,852,000,000.
Exports in June totalled $340,000,
000, as against $329,000,000 in May
and $629,000,000 in June, 1920, while
imports were $198,000,000, compared
with $204,000,000 in May and $552,
000,000 in June, 1920.
While lower-than the total for the
previous year and the $7,000,000,000
total in 1919, exports for the last
fiscal year were greater than the
total of $5,919,000,000 in 1918. and
$6,290,000,000 in 1917.
Exports during the last year were
greater than in any year since 1917,
with the expection of 1920.
Gold imports for the fiscal year
aggregated $646,000,000, compared
with $150,000,000 in the previous
year, while exports totalled $133,000,
000. as against $446,000,000.

Man Burned by. Live Wire
Tecumseh, Neb., July 11. (Spe
cial.) Mell Yoder of Sterling, elec
tric lineman, who came near being
electrocuted when he c.ime in con
tact with a live wire a month ago,
will have to go to a hospitsl for skin
grafting. A number of deep burns
were inflicted on his body. He was i
unconscious for hours after bis shock
and at first it was thought he could
not recover.

Lincoln. July 11. (Special.) Ne
braska's finances are improving and
the "hardtimes" are near an end, ac
cording to announcement today in
ft statement issued by Gov. S. R. Mc
Kelvie. "Corn in this state is at least two
weeks in advance of normal condi
tions and the fields are generally
clean with an exceptionally good
stand," the report read. "So with
the new crop well assured the large
surplus of corn now in the farmers'
hands will be marketed without much
further delay. All of the crops with
the single exception of fruit, are
similarity good.
"These crops represent wealth. It
is from these sources that the ob
ligations that were incurred during
the war must be discharged, and the
nation's buying power restored. I
estimate that at least $25,000,000 of
this new wealth will find its way into
the banks of Nebraska within the
next six months. This amount will
undoubtedly be increased to over
$100,000,000 during the 12-month pe
riod. "The bottom of the decline has
been reached and there will be a
gradual return to substantial busi
ness conditions. The country is be-
gnning to realize that a return to
normalcy means, not the artifical re
adjustment of business conditions
through legislation, but rather a re
adjustment that will come only
through the application of sound
principles of industry, thrift and
economy."
The governor stated that his opin
ion was based upon a recent 2,500
niile tour of the state.
"I am not prepared to say that
present prices will return a profit,"
he said. "There is no profit at pres
ent prices if sold direct to the market,
but there is a fine profit in feeding
corn, at present prices, to hogs. Also
the cost of feeders on the cattle mar
ket has declined almost 50 per cent
the last year until now a good quality
stuff may be put into the feed
yard at A'2 to 5 cents a pound.
"If the market for fat stuff should
remain stationary until these low
priced feeders can be prepared for it,
the cattle business will have turned
from a heavily losing one to a rea
sonably profitable proposition."
Prospectors Strike
Oil in North Part of
Black Hills, Report
Deadwood, S. D., July 11. (Spe
cialsReports have reached here
that oil has been struck in the north
ern Black Hills. Drilling is under
way at several points near Dead
wood and many more properties are
being examined by geologists with
the view to more extensive prospect
ing. Among the projects which are be
ing drilled is that on the Nelson
ranch on Spring creek. An oil cor
poration has had a rig on this prop
erty for several weeks and at present
has drilled 320 feet and is in the red
beds now.
Another rig is now going up on
the property just two miles south of
thef corporation holdings and drilling
will commence as soon as the rig is
set up.
The St. Onge field, which is nine
miles east of the Spring creek field,
is the most likely looking field yet
discovered in South Dakota. Nor
beck & Nicholson have sunk several
test wells in this field and are now
snipping in a big rig for the purpose
of putting down a 12-inch hole.
